The last of the classic open-top Triumphs was also one of the best – great styling and simple mechanicals make a Triumph Spitfire a super choice as a classic car

The attractive, soft-top Triumph Spitfire is really about fun. And fun is something the Spitfire delivers by the bucket-load. There is easily enough pep to easily keep up with modern traffic. Light, accurate steering makes for a very engaging drive too.

Background

Launched in 1962, the very final Triumph Spitfire rolled off the production line in August 1980 – this model is also once of the last, having been manufactured in July of that year.

The Spitfire’s design endured. It had two major facelifts in the car’s eighteen year lifespan. One in 1967 for the Mk3 and again in 1970 for the Mk4, which went on as the very popular and most powerful Spitfire, the 1500.

The introduction of the 1500 engine in the mid-seventies helped boost performance of the lightweight sports car. The extra torque along with overdrive made the car more relaxing to drive and restored the 100 mph top speed.

By the time production ended in August 1980, over 300,000 cars had rolled off the line.. These days, it’s an extremely enjoyable, regular use classic car, and one which you’re unlikely to lose money with. Especially this one, given where the sensible reserve is.

 Interior

  • Upgraded black leather bucket seats
  • With matching yellow piping
  • Full wood veneer dash
  • Wood trimmed sports steering wheel

The Triumph Spitfire interior is as simple as they come and great because of it. You drop into the cockpit. The steering wheel position feels instinctive. Without looking, just extend your left arm and the gear leaver falls naturally to hand. It all just feels good

The interior is original, with the exception of the nice upgraded seats. The black convertible hood is in good condition with the perspex ‘glass’ clear from fogging..

The cabin looks in decent, good condition. The helpful luggage space behind the seats is tidy and intact.

The wooden dash is original and in good condition.

Outside

  • Stove enamelled chassis
  • Inca Yellow coachwork
  • Dunlop wheels
  • Stone chip paint/underbody protection

Someone has taken care of this classic Spitfire, preserving the Spitfire body with good anti-corrosion protection and going another stage by having additional protection applied to the separate chassis in the way of stove enamelling. That is unusually rare.

The black and polished-alloy Dunlop wheels are a great treat and really set the Inca Yellow coachwork off.

All the brightwork on the screen surround, doors and front and rear bumpers appears tidy.

Mechanicals

  • Alloy rocker cover
  • Twin carbs
  • Stage II cylinder head
  • Fast road cam
  • Braided hoses
  • Stainless steel exhaust

The Triumph Spitfire mechanicals are solid, safe and simple. Lift that clam shell bonnet and nearly everything can be reached. Your eye will be drawn to the alloy rocker cover. Under there lurks a Stage II head.

The 1500 was the most popular and powerful engine fitted to the Spitfire in its final years of development. With these mods, the super-light Spitfire becomes even more fun.

The use of overdrive makes longer weekend-away journeys even more enjoyable. The eagle eyed will spot in the clean engine bay that someone has helpfully numbered the plug leads. That, is a sign. A good one. The sign of careful owner.

Our vendor has also advised that he changed the (notoriously unreliable!) front suspension trunnions to Canley classics rose joints so that’s a worry taken care of.

He has also fitted 4 pot brake callipers to the front so as to assist braking and a Microscan alarm immobiliser.

A quick inspection of the MOT history reveals an interesting detail. Between 2006 – 2022, the Spitfire has covered under 2000 miles.

Our vendor believes the current mileage is accurate. As always, you will have to make your own enquiries.

Our view

It’s fun to drive. There’s a real feel-good factor to the Spitfire. Fast fun and frugal they are easy to own and enjoy. This nice one is good to go – in full working order with no work outstanding for the new owner.

Best of all? It has to go. The reserve is set very, very sensibly.
