Description

  • Restored over a 5 year period
  • Excellent condition
  • 2.6ltr straight six engine
  • MOT’s Log Books and other period bits and bobs
  • Part of a private collection

There’s something wonderfully ‘right’ and also wonderfully British about a good Rover P4. There’s a crisp, engineered feel that works well with all the expensive wood and leather. All the best people had one; The Mayor, the Bank Manager, Captain Mainwaring…

Best of all, clambering aboard a classic Rover P4 is an exciting experience, with those suicide rear doors. The P4’s are more sturdy than the QE2 and back in the day were just as luxurious.

The model launched to much acclaim at the 1949 Earls Court Motor Show in London. Through various model numbers and good solid development of the marque, the production gave way to the venerable P5 in 1964.

However, he six-cylinder Rover P4 models are easily the best and most popular, if its got a badge on it that says 100 – like this one, you’ve hit the jackpot.

Starting on the outside with the all important body; it looks smashing. In fairness, it’s entitled to. Over a five-year period it has a had a full restoration. Rover used quality steel when they built the P4’s and they were engineered with longevity in mind. The external chrome work and brightwork is in excellent condition. That statement front grille is in tip top condition. It has even got lovely details such as the correct period wing mirrors and fully functional fog and driving lamps. It is a real gem.

When we move inside, it is very much more of the same, only better. The restorer has managed to capture an authenticity that we rarely see. It is a clever balance between originality, such as the rear reading lamps, grab rails and chrome door architecture and making sure everything works as it should. They achieved that.

Slide behind the marvellous original steering wheel with centre chrome, across that two-piece bench seat and you find yourself in a wonderful space. The walnut dash, clocks, bakelite switch gear is all correct and proper, just as it should. The door cards, with armrests are in in super condition. The classic Rover has a new matching colour carpet. The hard to find and get right headlining is just as you’d want it to be.

Oh, nearly forget; the radio works too. It probably only gets the British Broadcasting Company Home Service though, and maybe Test Cricket! It does take you back to an era when things felt right. Let’s not get started, eh!

Moving the centre-piece of the classic Rover P4; the engine. Fire up the 2.6ltr straight six engine and it’s barely audible. Get moving and progress is smooth and relaxed. You’re wafted along in a stress-free manner like few contemporaries can achieve. The engine has all the original features, and looks in great condition. We asked our vendor and he says, “It’s in excellent condition throughout, very good starter. Runs well”. He is a man of few words, but what more do you need!

This bit is important. This classic Rover comes with the all important overdrive which is fully functional. It is a perfect adjunct to the sublime straight six and that is one of the many reasons the Rover 100 model is so very popular.

A couple of other relevant matters came up too, we’ll let our succinct vendor explain;

All tyres are cross ply including the spare.  The rear springs have been wrapped and greased.

The Rover has the correct period wing mirrors and working fog and driving lamps.

All front bushes have been replaced, fuel diamonds in tank and wipers go to rest once the car is turned off.  A Master isolator is fitted. New carpets have been fitted. Once warmed up the radio works. Car comes with the previous tool tray, jack, starting handle, MOTs, logbooks, tax discs and a drivers manual. This car is a testament to its previous owner”.

Summary

The most popular of very popular  Rover P4s; the 100. Fully restored. Excellent condition with many original features and bundles of authenticity.

Runs and drives very well with a rare working overdrive. What a smashing car.

Prices are creeping up for good ones, and it is hard to come across those at a sensible price. This one is a good one and set at a very realistic reserve. Don’t miss it.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classic cars are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’ on a vehicle.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘cars are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classic cars.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
