Description

  • RHD drive UK spec
  • Owned for five years
  • Previous owner kept it for eighteen years
  • Wonderfully quirky and great fun

Microcars, or ‘Bubble Cars’ as they are often affectionately referred to, have in recent years become extremely collectable.

Small in size means garaging them is a breeze. Being very economical, easy to maintain and insure, above all else they are weird, wacky, and immensely fun! These can be one of the most inexpensive and enjoyable ways to enter classic car ownership – as well being a little bit addictive. Our vendor has had this for five years but did know the car prior to that; it belonged to a good friend of his for eighteen years.

One of the most popular among collectors is the Heinkel Kabine based UK built Trojan. Heinkel worked with partners in markets around the world to build them and Heinkels were made in places as diverse as Buenos Aires, Dundalk and of course the very glamorous, Croydon.

This is one of the Surrey built models, the Trojan 200. These were built under licence by the Trojan Motor Company in 1959.

In 1961 Trojan purchased the world-wide marketing rights for the car. It is understood they also bought the production line, 100 complete cars and numerous kits of parts. Production started towards the end of 1961 and ended in 1964. Around 6,100 units were produced in total, making this Trojan 200 one of the last.

Being a UK spec car, the opening front door hinges to the left. Opened, it reveals a lovely two-seater cabin. The adjustable bench seat is covered alongside the rest of the inside, in the original tartan trim. Underneath the spare wheel is housed.

The all-around canopy on a steel body does give the distinct impression of a bubble, but it makes for perfect visibility coupled with the fact that it is hilarious to bomb down the road in and see people smiling and waving.

Although it is a microcar, there is space and storage aplenty. This Trojan 200 comes with a lovely rear luggage holder and basket too. Rear quarter vents and what Trojan called a “sunshine roof” all add to the open-air feel.

Rare and original features such as the three spoke steering wheel and simple instrument cluster are all there. To top it all off, our vendor, Mark, tells us this Trojan 200 has an incredibly rare ‘green sun visor’ as well.

This Trojan 200 looks very lovely in period Spartan Red paintwork. There of course are the usual blemishes that you’d find on any classic of this age. The images in the Gallery are very helpful. Mark was at pains to make sure we say the mirror glass fell out recently! The mirror is fine, just the glass.

We’re told this Trojan has the 200cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine. Mark told us, “It starts instantly, and I recently spent around six hundred pounds on bits and bobs including the clutch”.

Interestingly, although looking very idiosyncratic, the Trojans did come with very modern features.

  • Four-speed transmission with reverse
  • Rack and pinion steering
  • Flashing indicators with built in parking lights
  • Electric starting
  • Independent front suspension
  • Swinging arm suspension at the rear

Mark told us; “The Trojan 200 runs on normal petrol and is very economical. It drives well and the brakes are keen as mustard”.

Our view

What a great classic. It’s eccentric and hilarious to drive. Everywhere you go people will just want to stop and chat. The Heinkel based Trojan is widely accepted as the most popular, sturdy and fun of the generic ‘bubble’ cars. Miserly on fuel, yet they can cruise at 50mph.

In recent years given the growth in their popularity there is a great club scene, with run-outs, rallies and all sorts of help. Those in it say it is one of the best club scenes.

We love them. We do not see enough of them. It is a joy to have the opportunity to market this Trojan 200 and the rest of Mark’s collection of classics. Do not miss this opportunity. Good luck.

Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

 Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
