  • Utterly charming

Even a mention of the name ‘Wolseley’ conjures up memories of a much different world.

Long, low and graceful. It was often said that the doormen at The Ritz would stand “slightly straighter” when a Wolseley would glide up!

The big Wolseley quite rightly won massive favour among the Police. Its good handling and top speed were very useful. Rather than ‘standing straighter’, many a wayward ‘erbert  would collapse into their seat at the sight of the big Wolseley coming around the corner.

History

The upgraded Wolseley 16/60 was introduced in October 1961

Externally, the rear fins and tail-lamps were revised. The rear overriders were now re-aligned to the lamp clusters.

The most impressive changes were mechanical. More power came from a bigger, better engine The Borg-Warner automatic transmission was now available as an option as on this one we have here at auction.

Improvements to ride, handling and comfort came from modifications to the suspension Upgrades were made to the shock absorbers and spring rates. Additional stabilising and anti-roll bars were fitted front and rear. The 16/60 front and rear track was widened and the wheelbase increased. It was little wonder they were very desirable cars.

The Wolseley 16/60 continued almost unchanged for the next 10 years.

Overview

Our vendor, I’m sure he won’t mind us saying this, is what you would call a serial buyer and has owned over two hundred classics during his lifetime.

He acquired this Wolseley 16/60 from a friend just three months ago and although he loves it dearly, work commitments and soon to be lack of storage means that he has had to rethink his ownership.

Stunning in blue over white with blue leather interior, EPK 496B has certainly been cossetted by it’s seven owners.

Unfortunately other than a workshop manual and the current V5, there is no history to tell us the story of the Wolseley so far.

Our vendor believes that it has undergone restoration within the last ten years and as you can see from the photographs, a marvellous job has been done. Externally, it is a joy to behold. The chrome work is beautiful and the paintwork, other than a small patch of blistering on the nearside rear door, is just lovely. Step inside and take a seat, the blue interior with matching carpets is comfy, spacious and inviting.

You’ll see from the detailed photos that everything is just as it should be, the lovely wooden dash and door cappings, well presented door cards and door furniture, interior lights and superb headlining.

The rear of the drivers seat could do with a little TLC where the glue has started to pull away, an easy, non-invasive job for those in the know.

The 1622cc engine runs well and ticks over just nicely as you can hear in the video, the automatic column change is smooth.

*Please note – from MOT history we see that the mileage was at 31,136 from 2013 to 2019. The odometer is now showing 32,362 miles so we can only assume that it was stuck at some point.*

Summary

Beautifully put together and supremely imposing. They simply don’t build them like this anymore do they?

Today, you’ll have no problems keeping up with modern traffic, and the Wolseley 16/60 provides a decent ride. They will do 80mph, but that is only for the brave. Anyway, you’ve no need to hurry in a Wolseley. Few classic cars really have more presence.

When it comes to space, practicality, dependability, comfort and above all else, style, you’ll be doing well to come up with a classic that offers so much. There is a great owners club scene too. Buy this one and you can join them.

Sarah has had the benefit of seeing this lovely Wolseley. So who better to ask for an honest appraisal. “Flippin lovely” she exclaimed. “I’d buy it”.

That says it all really, doesn’t it. Good luck.

Good luck bidding! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: Market Weighton, YO43  – it’s the responsibility of the buyer to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
