Back in the day, the demand for small luxury cars resulted in production of the 1100 and 1300 Vanden Plas Princess. Originally inspired by a bespoke Morris 1100 commissioned by Fred Connolly, BMC loved the result so much, they went on to produce their own version. The 1300 launched in 1967 and the little car with a lot of luxury proved to be a popular choice.

Owned by the vendor for 15 years, he’s here to tell you the story so far….

I acquired the Vanden Plas Princess back in 2007 and carried out the restoration work over the last couple of years or so. Prior to me purchasing the car it had been off the road and in dry storage since 1984.

The car has three recorded keepers and is showing a mileage of 32,000. Although not warranted, I believe this to be genuine given the condition of the bodywork and the time the car has spent off the road. Since I completed the work, the Vanden Plas has covered around 360 miles, only being used on dry days, sparingly. 

The interior is original, except for the carpets. The seats have not been re-upholstered or restored. The woodwork is also original and shows no damage and is complete. The boot carpet is the original and perfect. The headlining is also original and in excellent condition. 

The Princess has original panels all round with the possible exception of the front panel but I cannot be 100% sure. The bodywork and underbody are free from any welding or restorative fabrication work. The floor is all original with no welding or patching.

I would venture to say that you would be very hard pushed to find a more honest and straight example. The rear subframe is again original and has not been welded. It has also been shot blasted and powder coated. The front subframe was cleaned and painted when the engine was removed. 

Externally the car presents with all its original bright work with the addition of four new chrome hubcaps. It sits on freshly powder coated wheels and brand new tyres. It was re-sprayed in its factory colour by myself. Although perfectly acceptable the finish could be further enhanced by some additional mopping should you wish. The door shuts were not painted and are in the original factory paint. 

Mechanically the car wants for nothing and runs beautifully. All the hydrolastic pipes have been replaced, with no leaks from any of the displacers. It has a completely new exhaust system as well as a thoroughly overhauled braking system. The master cylinder, all lines and all shoes and pads have been replaced. I have also replaced the steering rack, all ball joints, head lamp units, voltage regulator, solenoid and starter motor. 

The engine has been completely stripped and rebuilt, with the machining work done by Malvern Rebore Ltd. The bores have been honed with new rings. The engine has a standard crank which has been ground to 0.010 thou. The timing chain and sprockets are new, along with a new water pump, oil pump and all gaskets and seals. The engine returns an oil pressure of 60 + PSI.  

The car has a manual gearbox which has been checked over and has good synchros and does not leak any oil. The car has a new clutch as well as master and slave cylinders fitted.

The gearbox selects all gears, first is a little tight but is easing up a little more every time the car is driven. The gearbox does whine, but this is pretty much standard! Originally, it had an automatic, but when I carried out the restoration I converted it to a manual, using a matched manual engine and gearbox which came with the car when I purchased it.

I have the original engine and auto gear box however and they will be included in the sale. They are both complete, the gearbox being in good order but the engine will require a crank.

Our View

Of course we love it. Jump in and you’ll feel like you’re in a miniature Rolls. Built at a time when Joe Bloggs wanted daily, affordable luxury, and this was just that.. fit for a Princess.
