Description

  • Restored 10 years ago
  • In good condition
  • Matt Black Wire Wheels
  • Many new parts
  • Subtle styling cues making it stand out

A charming, sought after early MGB GT. The MGB is one of the best-loved classic cars in the UK classic car market. There are few classics that enjoy such a brilliant amount of support, are great fun to own and drive and are thoroughly all round enjoyable.

MGB GTs have always gone racing. This one hasn’t, let’s be clear. It has, however had several mods which make it stand out from what is a crowded MGB GT marketplace, yet it retains all the best elements that make the MGB GT so popular.

Engine and mechanicals

The classic MGB GT B-Series 1800cc engine is as strong as anything and a good one reminds you of just how civilized and sweet a well-sorted four-cylinder engine can be.

  • The engine is described by our vendor as “excellent” and “starting on the button”
  • Fitted with electronic ignition
  • A new alternator
  • New oil cooler
  • Chrome rocker box cover
  • Polished SU dash pots
  • Chrome mesh pancake filters

As you can see from the images in the Gallery, the engine bay is clean and tidy, and it looks like it has had a number of new parts fitted as part of a ten-year-old restoration.

Outside

When this MGB GT was restored and subtly modified ten years ago, a lot of effort and attention to detail was clearly taken and it all hangs together very agreeably.

The Old English White makes the MGB GT look every inch the classic it is. It wasn’t always white, prior to 2012 this MGB was Green, British Racing Green we assume.

Sitting on rather unusual Matt Black wire spoke wheels with polished chrome spin-offs, it looks very good.

The understated racing stripes on each door together with a couple of subtle period logos and the vinyl front number across the bonnet, do complement the colour very well.

Other nice touches include

  • Metallic red front towing eye
  • Aluminium bonnet
  • Metallic red air intake cut into the nearside of the front grille
  • Bonnet strap
  • Single bullet style door mirror on the offside
  • Racing headlamp bubbles with alloy fixings
  • Five matt black wire spoke wheels

And, of course, the Sebring style lower front panel minus the front bumper. The package works well and would look good in any paddock.

Inside

The interior of this MGB GT is very tidy, original and period.

  • Black leather seats with white piping
  • Wrapped three spoke steering wheel
  • The interior carpets are all sound
  • The door cards are clean and undamaged
  • The crinkle finish dash is in good condition
  • All the original switchgear and gauges are present and correct
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Alloy door architecture
  • The Webasto roof we are assured by the vendor is “watertight”

The interior and especially the dash and clocks are much preferred to the sanitized later models. Of course, there is no Sat Nav on these classics. But on this one there is a helpful geo centred compass on the dash in case you get lost on the way to the Co-op.

Vendor information

“This is a 1972 MGB GT ‘Race car’ in very good condition. It was fully restored ten years ago. The brakes are very good, and it drives great. The Webasto roof is watertight, and a number of new parts have been fitted. Tax and MOT exempt. The speedo works but does not record the mileage. It is a lovely little car”

Our view

To badly paraphrase the famous advert with the legendary Maureen Lipman, “So, as far as you’re concerned MGBs come in all the sizes and in every colour?”

The answer is, yes, they do. There are still thousands of them on the market at any one time because they are so popular.

But if you’d like one that stands out a little, with some delightful, yet subtle styling mods, and still retains everything that is brilliant, reliable, easy to live with and fun about an MGB GT, then this is the one. Go on, you know you want to.

Good luck! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: County Durham, TS21 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
