Phil Read was one of Britain’s most successful Grand Prix racers. He was also one of the fastest, bravest motorcycle racers of all time.

Winning eight world championships alongside 52 Grand Prix victories between 1961 to 1975, he became the first rider to take world titles in the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc categories. A feat since matched only by Valentino Rossi.

Known as the “Prince of Speed”, not unsurprisingly, he lived a colourful life and raced at a time when the sport was highly dangerous.  Nobody within the sport were in doubt of the talent of Phil Read. At the height of his career he raced shoulder to shoulder with all the great names, Sheene, Agostini and Hailwood.

In those days Grand Prix racing was not exclusively at safe, purpose built circuits. Many were on closed public roads with little if any regard to riders safety. In the early 70’s Read was one leading a boycott of none other than the famous Isle of Mann TT circuit – at that time a GP circuit. His outspoken criticism didn’t endear him to many British fans at the time.

All that changed in the hot Summer of 1977 when Read returned breaking the boycott. It was one of most loved and famous victories on a machine made by Honda

As a tribute, Honda commissioned Colin Seeley to build a limited run on 750 F2’s

Colin Seeley’s long love affair with motorcycles began at 16 on his dad father’s Vincent Rapide. He became an indentured apprentice for a Motorcycle Dealer near to his home Kent.

While working his way through various positions Seeley became acquainted with Bernie Ecclestone who had a Dealership nearby. He would later work with Ecclestone, first as Managing Director of at Brabham Racing, and with the Brabham Formula 1 team.

But long before that, Seeley saw success in racing himself. He rode with a great deal of success on BSAs, Triumphs and Greeves bikes.

Later in his career he successfully competed in World Sidecar Championships. And went onto even more success in TT races with the legendary Rennsport BMW bike.

Once his racing days were over, Seeley began building his fabulous frames. These earned an enviable reputation. He went on to build race bikes that became the default for many racers.

The quality, popularity and performance of Seeley’s meant he was commissioned by many manufacturers to build high-quality limited-edition specials.

These Honda Phil Read Replica bikes are in high demand today, Evoke Classics are delighted to have two of them at auction with us. This one and a 1980 Honda Britain 750 F2.

This Honda 750 F2 Phil Read Replica

The bike you see here is a rare bird, a small number were commissioned by Honda to celebrate Phil Read’s 1977 Isle of Man TT victory in 1977 aboard an 820cc version of the Honda CB750 F2.

The F2 had been released a year earlier in 1976 as an upgrade over the original CB750. It had a new head with larger valves, a hotter cam shaft, and 28mm Keihin carburretors with accelerator pumps – this boosted power slightly to 70 hp at 9500 rpm.

Seeley’s team set about their task with some passion.

At the front end they fitted a double beam full fairing with twin headlights.

A unique, hand built, 5 gallon alloy fuel tank replace the production tank.

Racing-style three quarter rear sets give canted the rider forward slightly to accommodate the mildly raked clip-on handle bars. Both the gear lever and rear brake pedal were specially made and unique to the genuine Replicas.

A complete new single seat was designed and incorporated into a rear cowl. The only mechanical mod was special custom built high-flow performance exhaust in matt black.

The whole package was then christened in the same red, white & blue racing colour scheme used by the Honda Britain Racing Team.

Only 150 or so bikes were built before a fall out between Phil Read and Honda ended the project.

This one has been part of small collection amassed over a number of years. It has been owned by our vendor for around a dozen years. The enthusiast he purchased it from kept it in an air tight cocoon. The bike was taken out on high days and holidays to shows and was awarded a 3rd in show winner.

Any work that the Honda Phil Read Replica needed was carried by the very well-known Rising Sun Restorations of Tockwith in York, who have since sadly closed. However, their experienced technicians continue to look after customer’s bikes.

Our vendor, Phil, says the Replica is totally standard. He recently took it to an ex-employee of Rising Sun because it wasn’t idling properly. Some weeks later, with his wallet slightly lighter, he returned to collect it after the top end had been rebuilt.

Our view

It’s thought that less than 40 original Honda CB750 Phil Read Replicas have survived. This is one of them and comes to market now with some poignancy. Both Seeley and Read sadly passed away recently. We don’t have to tell you what a difference that makes to the collectability of these great machines.

These will have massive market appeal. To those of us of certain vintage who stood outside Dealers gawping and just loved these unobtainable pieces of motorcycle art and those who can now afford them. And of course to collectors. Don’t miss out!

Good luck! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: Doncaster DN8 – it’s the responsibility of the buyer to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
