This Dodge RAM B150 is one of the B-Series vans – a range of full-size vans produced by the Chrysler Corporation between 1970 –2003 in Ontario, Canada.

Although Chrysler made 2 redesigns of their B-platform van (this particular van being a 2^nd generation model) the exterior sheet metal remained mostly unchanged over the course of their 32 year production run. This cemented their position as one of the longest used platforms in US automotive history.. Chrysler possibly living by the mantra “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

Due to its one welded piece “uniframe” design, the B-platform vans were stronger and lighter than their competitors – dominating the market until they were overtaken by Ford in the 1990s. It’s little wonder they are still so sought after today.

These panel vans were often custom made into Day Vans and we’re happy to offer one such example.

This 1982 Dodge RAM B150 is customised with plywood panelling and some great quirky touches, such as the 70’s inspired interior, bespoke interior pinstripe paintwork and billiard ball window handles.

Paperwork 

This van was imported into the UK from Citrus Heights, California back in 2019.

There is a colour photocopy of the State of California Certificate of Title with the van plus the current V5 and a genuine factory workshop manual.

Outside & Underneath 

As expected from a Californian van, the Dodge RAM B150 benefits from previously living in a dry, sunny state. That means there is very little rust to be found.. anywhere.

This includes the usual suspects of door bottoms and sills. It’s not easy to find a 40 year old van that is as solid as this one.

Still sporting most of its original beige and brown paintwork, this is something of a rarity in a van of this vintage. There are of course, the expected age-related chips and scratches in places.

The 5 spoke chromed alloy wheels with white banded tyres also really enhance the overall look of the van.

The Dodge’s suspension was professionally lowered before it was exported from the US. The van also has the rare, optional extra-large fuel tank.

Engine & Mechanicals

This Dodge RAM B150 has a 225ci (3.7 litre) straight six engine – commonly known as a ‘Slant Six’. This is backed up with the rare 4 speed manual overdrive gearbox, a combination that means you get exceptionally good MPG for an American van

The side exit exhaust also gives a fantastic, throaty rumble.

The odometer shows 67,408 miles and although we can’t verify this – the previous owner tried to, we’re advised that the engine runs so smoothly that’s it’s hard to believe that it’s not correct but please make your own enquiries.

Inside 

Featuring deep cushioned shagpile carpets, entering this van is truly like stepping back in time. The door cards have been re-covered in diamond stitch vinyl and new period style curtains have been fitted.

The wide back covered seat folds into a bed, please note though the velour upholstery is showing its age (see images at end of gallery) so would benefit from some work or as our vendor has done, pop a throw on it and get comfy.

The carpet appears to be original but is worn in places. There’s the usual loss of paint from the doors, where arms have rested over the years, cruising in the Californian sunshine but we think it all adds to the charm of this highly useable van.

The dash, engine cover and steering wheel all feature bespoke, hand painted pinstripe designs – a unique touch that really makes this van something special.

Our View 

We love it, of course we do. It’s different. It’s cool and these Dodge vans don’t hit the market very often. You aren’t going to be too precious about a van like this, it’s totally useable.

Get in, drive it anywhere and chill. As we said, these vans don’t come up for auction very often. So now’s your chance to be one of the coolest kids on the block.
