Meticulously built with top-quality components, the Porsche 944 was expensive when it was new. Today the 944 offers a lot for the money..

With almost perfect 50/50 front & rear weight distribution, the 944 was designed with the driver experience in mind. It’s 2.5 litre engine provides the right amount of power that you can have bundles of fun with, without getting into trouble. With 2+2 seating and good rear load space the Porsche is an extremely practical classic meaning you can enjoy it all year round.

Background

This Porsche 944 has been with our vendor for a very short time. It is coming to the market now because of a very private and personal tragedy. Enough said.

  • Registered 1st Feb 1984
  • Stored since 2006
  • During that time the 944 was renovated by previous owner
  • MOT records show mileage was then 39,274 and is now just 40,281
  • This is supported by MOT’s as you’ll see from our Image Gallery
  • Fully brought back to life
  • Much money and time spent
  • MOT expires July 2023

When Porsche launched the 924, it was panned by Porsche enthusiasts for its Audi-sourced engine. Bruised by the scathing comments, Porsche upped their game by introducing the 924 Turbo. They then upped it again with a Le Mans winning race car.

The 924 Carrera GT ran a 2.5 litre Porsche developed engine. The Carrera had Class wins and managed the creditable seventh behind a 936. In 1982 Porsche delighted everyone with the production road legal version of the race car, calling it the 944. The public could not get enough of them. The words ‘cakes’ and ‘hot’ spring to mind.

Inside

The interior of the first gen Porsche 944’s are considered by many to be the best. Possibly due to the fact they only made them for two years and they were very ‘period’. Scarcity matters.

On the inside, this 944 is in all original condition. The black leather seats, door cards and dashboard are holding up well to three decades of time. There is the usual wear and tear with slight fading on the seats. Some elbow grease and conditioning would not do any harm, but each to his own.

The dash and all the other ‘hard’ areas are again slightly weathered, but in good overall condition free from damage.

We understand all of the switchgear works including the lights, gauges, wipers, heater, electric mirrors, electric windows. There is the nice touch of a removable roof panel also.

Carpets, headlining and other bits of soft trim are in good condition, with no rips, tears or marks. The rear load space is nice and tidy with the carpets and side panels in good shape. You’ll see images of the spare wheel well which is in good order. However, our vendor notes that we do not have a spare wheel.

Mechanicals

What made the Porsche 944 special was the all new engine. What makes this one special is the money recently spent.

The all new alloy 2.5 litre engine was in essence half of the Porsche 928 5.0 litre V8. Porsche cleverly fitted the four-cylinder engine with two counter-rotating balance shafts. These running at double the engine speed made the 2.5 litre four feel as sublime as a six pot. Drive it and you’ll see why everyone raves about them. We also understand this Porsche 944 has had;

  • A top end engine rebuild
  • New injectors
  • New brake callipers all round, brake lines, disc pads
  • New shock absorbers
  • New clutch
  • New fuel pump
  • The important solid state DMR relay
  • New crank and speed sensors and accompanying loom
  • New battery
  • New belts
  • Recent service

We have a strong sense this is a very solid Porsche 944.

Outside

  • Galvanised body
  • In Guards Red
  • Removable Roof Panel
  • Cookie Cutter Black Wheels
  • Purpose made 944 weatherproof car cover

Porsche really knows how to design and build a sports car. They were eye-wateringly expensive at the time, but boy were they well put together. The timeless classic lines will still turn heads today. Expect to be stopped and have chat with someone almost every time you go out.

As you’ll see from the images, the exterior does look good. The headlamps work as they should. Bumpers and lamps are damage free. In probably the most striking classic, Porsche colour it looks rather divine. Take a look at the Image Gallery and make your own mind up though.

Bottom line

The Porsche brand stands for quality and driving experience. The attraction of the Porsche 944 hasn’t reduced with time. It still handles great. Its quick. It’s practical. It can easily be your everyday car, your B-road blatter, or your weekend getaway. In this age of modern tech, it somehow feels better that it did before. This is a straight, un-messed about with, original 944, no crazy engine mods, no boosted engine. All simply as Porsche intended.

The added bonus is this car has had a decent amount spent on it.  This is much more fun than sticking a few grand in ISA and probably a better return too. Good luck.

Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
