A garage ‘find’ that was never really lost.

Our vendor is handling the sale of this XJS V12 HE on behalf of his sister whose husband passed away recently with a neuro degenerative disease. That means info is tricky to come by.

The time has come to part with it, someone is going to bag a genuine V12 XJS HE at an incredible price.

We expect considerable interest in the classic Jaguar, however, in a short article about the XJS we do not think we’ll be able to cover all your queries. So just ring or email us and we’ll answer them as we go.

When a car remains in production almost unaltered for 21 years it is a genuinely is a classic car.  With the last E-types rolling off the production line in 1974 Jaguar needed a worthy successor.  As early as the 1968 Jaguar was thinking ahead. It designated the initial project a codename; XJ21. This morphed in to the XJ 27/28 and after many internal discussions Jaguar finally settled on XJS.

On the 10 September 1975 Jaguar revealed the XJS to the world.

In V12 5.3 litre form the Jaguar XJS is a true supercar, with performance of 155mph and 0-60 in 7.3 seconds. As models developed, Jaguar made subtle changes making the XJS even better. Journalists delighted their readers with tales of travelling at 100 mph in near total silence.  The public couldn’t get enough of the XJS either

The mid 1980’s and in particular the HE models are accepted as the hey-day for the Jaguar XJS. Dealers had waiting lists of six months and pre-ordered cars were changing hands at large premiums.

These are highly prized. Especially original ones.

This Jaguar XJS HE

The classic XJS is in clean unrestored, original condition. The last MOT on the XJS was 23 November 2008. As the expired tax disc dated 10/09 shows, we think it was about then it went into storage, and that is where it stayed.

The V12 is a legendary engine and it is a remarkably reliable piece of engineering. We understand as a result of his illness, the owner would sometimes sit in and run the XJS in his garage. He stopped because it ran out of fuel.

It has had a new battery fitted, but didn’t fire. That was the full extent of our vendors knowledge and intervention. It does roll as you can see from the images as our vendor moved it out of the garage for the images.

Externally, the paint works looks original and sound. The brightwork looks good, including the expensive, gazillion piece bumpers which rot away just for the fun of it.

On the inside the cream leather seats are all in one piece and generally in rather good condition. The drivers side seat as usual has some wear. A good clean up, conditioning and elbow grease would probably bring it up to somewhere near on par to the others

We have some manuals, history and previous MOT’s. But little else, as is common with a deceased estate car.

Our view

A rare opportunity to own the best model Jaguar XJS V12. One that has been owned and simply unused for number of years.

It is in original un-molested condition, a rare opportunity indeed. Yes it needs recommissioning but taking one look at the images speaks volumes. Anyone who knows anything about these Jaguars will make the same assessment we did.

Decent V12 XJS of this vintage are start at around £10-12,000. Very good ones are over £15k. And the top 10% stand-out, Jaguar XJS are £20k plus, plus.

When we say our sensible and realistic vendor is selling this at a discount to those numbers we do mean a proper discount. Add the cost of a practical recommission to a sensible reserve, plus the Jag comes with a private plate valued at over £1,000 and the lucky new owner is getting a great bargain.
