A super compact off-roader that can go just about anywhere: the Suzuki SJ410. They are now so incredibly tricky to find, especially a low mileage one like this.

The history of Suzuki four-wheel drive vehicles is a long and very successful one, dating back to the 1960s. They dabbled for a few years before finally producing the first Suzuki-branded four-wheel drive, the LJ10 (Light Jeep 10) in 1970. The SJ40 came along in 1982 to replace the LJ80 range. It used the F10A 1.0-ltr four-cylinder engine producing 45bhp.

Four-speed manual transmission was standard. The Suzuki SJ410 that followed came as a half-door convertible, long-wheelbase pickup truck, two-door hardtop (called “Van” in Japan), raised-roof hardtop, and no-glass hardtop (panel van). Of course, we know them as a go anywhere, do anything tough little 4wd that was hugely popular in the 80s.  Seeing one today is a proper treat.

This rather rare and very original Suzuki SJ410 van was acquired in September 2013 by the vendor. It has only had 5 owners in 36 years including not only the current owner, but also the owner’s son as it was intended to be his first vehicle, but he declined the offer!

For most of its life the van has been in the London area, and this may account for what appears to be a very low original mileage of 49,586. MOT history shows that the van has completed just 3,949 miles in the past 18 years.

In the vendor’s ownership, the car has been kept in covered storage and a considerable amount of money has been spent to improve the car’s condition.

The history file of the Suzuki van is reasonably comprehensive with old MOTs, service/repair records and tax discs from 2000 to 2015 with just 2014 absent. There are copies of previous V5C logbooks and resident’s parking permits for Hammersmith and Fulham. A Haynes service manual and an original Suzuki SJ410 service manual are on file. DVLA tax and SORN requests are also present.

Work completed (all documented) includes a new battery, 3 new tyres, new spare wheel, fuel tank removed, flushed and cleaned, new fuel sender, new fuel hoses, new rear brake shoes, new brake pads, rear brake cylinders and front callipers, new three piece clutch, MOT welding repairs to the sills, seat belt anchor points costing over £400.  Welding to the rear boot corners was also carried out in 2013.

The van has recently passed its MOT and is in a much-improved condition compared to when the vendor purchased it. It is, however, not perfect and requires further attention should a new owner wish to take the van to the next level.

Underneath, the van is very solid, and the sills have been repaired. The rear inner wheel arches are sound, the near side inner wheel arch is fine but could do with protection whereas the offside front wheel arch needs some cosmetic plating. The wheel arch edges have some rust behind the plastic wheel arch trims.

The bonnet needs some repairs to the front corners, especially the offside. Both door bottoms need plates – the rest of the doors are in good condition.

As this is a commercial vehicle, there are small dents and scratches apparent. However, the load area, especially the floor, is in good condition.

The aerial is part broken and the driver’s seat base material has seen better days but both seats have attractive Suzuki seat covers on them.

All glass is etched with the van’s registration number. The windscreen is in acceptable condition, but there are signs of delamination. The tool kit with its bag is present, as are the original jack and jack handle. The spare wheel has a cover and there are locking wheel nuts (key present). There are Suzuki rear mud flaps.

Summary

This is a rare Suzuki SJ410 van that is in very original unrestored condition. The current owner has made improvements to its condition and has treated it very kindly. The only load it has carried recently has been his guitar to his guitar lessons. A super fun little van that can be driven as is or further improved.
