The Ford XR heritage needs no introduction. It is a pedigree brand. Forget the Cosworth. It’s the understated and hugely competent Sierra XR 4×4 that you really want.

Audi set the ball rolling, but Ford popularised 4WD production cars when the Chairman of Ford Europe ordered the legendary Ford’s Special Vehicle Engineering dept (SVE) to build a 4WD Sierra.  The classic XR 4×4 was born.

• The 4WD system was based around the Ferguson/FF system.
• It spread the drive; 34% drive at the front and 66% at the rear.
• Conventional drive was to the rear wheels.
• Drive to the front was provided by a front diff with drive shafts.
• The ride height was lowered, stiffer springs, uprated rear anti-roll bar and uprated shock absorbers were fitted.
• Power steering, four wheel disc brakes and alloy wheels are standard.

The 2.9-ltr V6 EFi was introduced in January 1989 in the facelift model we have here.

• It came with six port heads
• A new engine management system (EEC-IV).
• And longer crankshaft.

The change in engine coincided with a much improved gearbox, the MT75.

The interior was overhauled

• Electric windows front and rear
• Rear seat courtesy lights.
• Astral trim in Shadow Grey
• Heated windscreen
• Electrically heated wing mirrors
• Quartz analogue clock
• Lights on audible warning
• Graphic information module
• Headlight wash/wipe all became standard.

This brought the classic XR up to Ghia spec.

Looking around this classic Sierra XR 4×4 we can see a number of original, rare, period features remain:

• Original five spoke alloys
• Lumbar supports on the front seats
• Original Ford Radio
• Rear spoiler

There are some light surface scratches to the front wing. They look consistent with a dog or cat jumping onto the car. The headlamp wiper blades have gone walkabout!

The Astral interior is in very good condition. As is the carpet front and rear. The dash is crack free.

We asked our vendor to provide honest images, which are in the gallery and a summary and a view of the classic XR 4×4.

He explained;

“The Ford Sierra XR 4×4 has a genuine mileage and it runs very well.  The gearbox and transmission is very good. Underneath is very good just some surface rust. Over the back axle where they are noted to corrode very badly this one is perfect.  So all underneath sound.

The back of the driver’s side sill and passengers side sill have had 2 pieces welded in approximately 6 x  4 inches. Interior is excellent and as far as the body goes it has had no repairs in the last 7 years with no sign of rust.”

We note from the records the classic XR 4×4 has covered just 1,518 miles since 2012.

Our view

The Cosworth prices have gone bananas haven’t they? They are close to being unobtainable to ‘normal’ enthusiasts.

This brilliant Sierra XR4x4, however, isn’t. Ask anyone who knows, the superb handling, 150bhp XR 4×4  has just as much fun and admiration.

It’s a true performance model. But it is also easy to live with and is an everyday usable car. The all-wheel drive and the chassis encourages the driver to drive.

This one is an un-modified, honest, rare survivor. Best of all it’s affordable. A genuine, low mileage thoroughbred XR4x4. Don’t miss it.
