The R129 model began in 1989 as the previous boxier, squarer R107 SL ended. It was a massive step  forward from the classic R107. The result was an immediate success.

Standing the test of time, today the classic 300SL is a natural choice for those looking for a superbly engineered, reliable, open-topped grand tourer. It also has that special but indefinable factor that very few classic cars have.

History and paperwork

• In the last 16 years it has covered less than 400 miles a year
• Recent full service
• Very well looked after by both long term owners

The first owner had this classic 300SL 24 for 29 years. The service history is mainly Mercedes Main Dealer for about a ‘third of its life’ we are told.

The second owner had the car for less than a year and for around the last ten years the 300SL has been stored, only venturing out to have its annual MOT test and service. Through the later part of its life, the SL has been regularly maintained by the local garage

Inside

The interior is typical Mercedes quality, function and fit. And very luxurious too.

Other than the usual wear that is normal on the driver’s seat bolster, the whole interior is in good shape.

The distinctive signs of long term good ownership are there – for example the genuine Mercedes floor mats – as opposed to Halfords ones at a tenth of the price!

The 300SL is well spec’d with:

• Cruise control
• Electrically adjustable heated seats
• Wood trim
• Original Mercedes radio
• The dash is damage free

All the door trims, carpet, switchgear are in good condition.

Outside

The classic Mercedes SL coachwork is in remarkable condition for a car built in 1992. There are the odd stone chip here and there. Images are in the Gallery. But they are difficult to pick-up too. The outside is dent, scuff and scratch free.

This 300SL comes with;

• A new mohair hood; and
• A colour coded hard top, with a stand

Decent hard tops are hard to find. These will usually set you back the best part of a grand

The five alloy wheels are in good condition. Again, careful long term ownership have preserved these original Mercedes alloys well.

Engine and Mechanical

The Mercedes 300SL was a major success when it was launched. But the Germans didn’t sit back. Mercedes introduced the 300SL 24 with a M104 3.0-ltr 24-valve engine producing 230bhp.  This was over 40 bhp up on the previous model.

• There is an extensive history file
• A full service history
• And this car has clearly been well looked after

The MOT history is a testament to that. Nearly all of the tests have passed with no advisories. Somewhat remarkably it has just three failures. Two of the ‘failures’ have been for wiper blades, probably due to lack of use. The other was a brake pipe. And that is it.

During the last ten years it has been mainly stored. That clearly shows.

We are told the Mercedes drives ‘like a dream”.

Bottom line

This is a lovely car. It looks right. Drives right. And has a service history to support it. There are lots of R129s around at the moment. The 300-24v is very sought after. It doesn’t guzzle fuel like the monstrously powerful V8’s, but equally it is no slouch.

A lot these around doesn’t always mean every one is about quality.

Low ownership. Low mileage. Full history. And good condition means these ones are very desirable.

Most of all, they are fabulous amount of car – these were £65k new, with a three year waiting list – and are stonking good value. We don’t think that will last long. But while it does, take advantage and grab one of nicest 300SL 24 models on the market.
