The classic Saab 900i convertible is probably all the classic you’ll ever need.

It was engineered to last. It’s practical. Its comfortable. It has near a bomb roof twin cam engine. To top it all, the roof comes off.

The 900 was introduced in 1978. Like it’s predecessor, the 99, the 900 had a number of innovative and unique design features. Unlike some ‘quirky’ cars, the features worked as a result the 900 now has cult like status.

Saab went on to build nearly 1 million 900s. The convertible was introduced in 1984. Just 50,000 were classic Saab 900 convertibles making them much sought after now.

The 2.0 twin cam 16v engine producing 128bhp with Bosch K-Jetronic is superb. This particular engine is the later one, designated by Saab as B202. It went on to become a proven power unit in Formula Three racing for the very successful Reynard Motorsport team. It is that good.  Our vendor tells us this car has a ‘full service history’ that is ‘documented’ via a ‘full folder of receipts and Main Dealer stamps’.

These torquey sublime engines have a reputation for being easy to work on and bomb-proof. It is great to see one that has been professionally looked after during its life.

The interior atmosphere is unique only to a classic Saab. The high-set dashboard and superb wraparound windscreen echoes Saab’s aerospace heritage. The seat design is simply superb. For longer classic car road trips, with their ground-breaking orthopaedic construction along with inimitable built-in headrests they provide unapparelled levels of comfort. The massive bonus you get with a classic Saab 900i Convertible is that it is a genuine four seater. Due the exceptional build quality that Saab engineered in there are no sags or dropping of seat cushions on this particular lovely convertible. The vendor describes the pristine condition grey velour upholstery as ‘immaculate’. To us it looks near showroom fresh. You take a look.

Exterior (and hood)

Let’s start with the roof. When Saab launched the classic Saab convertible, they expected to sell around 2,000 units. This was Sweden after all. The incredible success of the first 400 meant they quickly had a two year customer waiting list.

The quality of the multi-layered roof outpaces all rivals. It was designed by ASC, (American Sunroof Company) and then hand built by technicians in the Valmet factory in Finland Hand-made: the Saab 900 Convertible roof system (saabplanet.com)

After 20+ years what is like now? Brand new is the answer. This particular classic Saab has had a complete new roof in 2021 along with a full frame restoration.

What is the rest of the exterior like? Not far off convertible roof condition to be honest. The vendor is clear in his detailed description; ‘everything on this car works’. This includes things that often don’t work, such as headlamp wipers, electric mirrors and all four electric windows, all function as they should. That is often a reflection of Main Dealer service stamps in the book and the vendor keeping the classic convertible garaged. For the avoidance of doubt, the vendor describes the coachwork as ‘excellent’. That is supported by the images.

Wheels, tyres and suspension

It is great to see the original Aero wheels in place. Even better to see them in good condition too. Having a full service history means a great deal. The vendor describes the Saab convertible as ‘driving like new’.

Our view

The classic Saab 900 enjoys a strong enthusiast, near cult like, following. That is obvious proof of the solidity of the Saab 900 and the original build quality. The Saab is double easy to live with and drive, whether in everyday use or in in brisk cross-country sprints. Even by today’s standards there is sufficient power, torque and flexibility to mean it won’t flounder at low speeds around town yet it feels nicely brisk and taught when pushed. It is easily on par, if not better than its then contemporaries such as the BMW 325.

All that is on top of having the benefit of a new roof, a FSH and genuine mileage. It is fair to say it is all the classic car you’ll ever need.

We’d imagine bidding will be busy because the vendor has set an extremely reasonable reserve. We’d expect the finishing line to be between £4,500 – £6,500.
