The Fiat Coupé made media headlines during 1992, after undercover test shots were revealed to the world. Fiat had decided to produce a new Coupe based upon the old Tipo platform when the Pininfarina factory was suddenly dormant. Two designs were put forward, with Fiat’s in-house Centro Stile team competing with Pininfarina .

At its launch in January 1994, the Coupe was available with a four-cylinder, 2.0 L 16V engine, in both turbo and normally aspirated versions. Both engines were later versions of Fiat’s twin-cam design and inherited from the Lancia Delta Integrale, winner of the World Rally Championship a record six times, and quickly became a major success.

Along with the new engines, Fiat also made some minor design changes including the front grill, steering wheel, the door panel now included leather, the interior centre console was redesigned and the digital clock was replaced with an analogue one.

History

Our vendor has shared that he lusted after one of these for some time. Being extremely particular, it took a while before he stumbled across this one after a chance conversation.  He eventually did the deal and became the proud owner of this Fiat 20V Turbo.  Purchased from the dealer principle at a prominent Fiat dealership in Kent, who had chosen it due to its fantastic condition and low mileage but failed to use it as he wanted so eventually had his arm twisted by our vendor to sell.

There was one other owner of the car prior to the dealership owner so with just two previous owners and a full service history warranting the mileage you will be getting your hands on a very special example.

It will be supplied with two keys including the all important red one, a plethora of previous MOTs, every single invoice from its wonderful service record which is all main dealer except the last one which was carried out at a prominent Fiat specialist.  All the manuals, including the aftercare folder and CD receiver are present and in place.

Engine and Transmission

Open up that unique clam shell bonnet and underneath you find a superb 20V five cylinder engine turbo, pushing out 220bhp with an incredible 310nm of torque. For a front wheel drive car that is rare even today and unheard of back then. To make sure all that power transfers, Fiat fitted a limited slip diff via a viscous drive unit. This counters the enormous torque steer that some front wheel cars suffer from as you hit the throttle and the steering wheel flips wildly like a great White Shark having its dinner.

Replacing the 2.0 16v Turbo engine with the 20V, Fiat introduced the blown version of the 2.0 20V 5 cylinder block. The 2.0 20V Turbo, came equipped with a state of the art Garret Turbo.

It produced an eye-popping, 220bhp, 6.5 seconds from 0-60, and a top speed of 155mph… what a car! As the fastest Fiat of all time and the fastest front wheel drive production car when it was launched, the new 20V Turbo is a piece of Fiat history.

Due to the design set-up, the 20V Turbo has great road holding capabilities. The safe choice of front wheel drive, meant this car was easy to drive extremely hard. The 20V Turbo gobbled up Porsches and made the odd Ferrari driver of the day think twice.

As previously mentioned, this Fiat 20V Turbo has been excellently maintained and has every single invoice from the full service history with the last one being carried out 2500 miles ago and included the usual fluid and filters plus a new set of plugs, the all-important cambelt and water pump.

Our vendor has also shared that the clutch was replaced in March this year. There really is nothing to do on this car, just slide into the driver’s seat and enjoy the well maintained example that it is.

Exterior

In original Fiat 20V Turbo colour of Steel Grey, silver to you and me, the galvanised body is as fantastic now as it was when it left the factory. Our vendor, being very particular chose to have the front and rear bumpers plus the bonnet painted as “there were a few stone chips bugging me which were the only blemishes on the car”.  The paintwork looks just as good now with the only blemish being a small stone chip on the bonnet that was picked up recently, seriously frustrating for our vendor considering how little the car is used.  The underside is as you would expect and is solid and rust free.

When the car was new, it was spec’d with a sunroof which is a lovely and a rare feature, as you would expect this works perfectly and seals correctly.

Evoke Classics have recently been very spoilt with the quality of the Fiat Coupes we have had the pleasure to rehome and this one does not disappoint either, another stunning example of these fantastic cars.

Interior

Well, the Italians do know how to build a sports car interior.  Fiat’s design flair is all over the cabin space with the deep-set dials echoing the look of those tail lights. It is such a subtle and clever touch.

This Fiat 20V Turbo Coupe has grey contrasting seats that look just as good as the exterior with only the slightest of wear on the drivers bolster, the rear seats look unused and the door pads are all in fantastic condition.  Even the roof lining is perfect with no signs of sagging or stains anywhere.  Lastly she will come with fitted 20V mats all round protecting the lovely carpet from those wet and muddy soles should you dare to take such a lovely example out in the rain…  Sacrilege!

Every single switch and button work as they should with every ancillary including the windows, operating correctly, as we previously mentioned even the sunroof works, a notorious issue on these lovely Fiats.

Wheels, Tyres, Suspension and Other

The Fiat 20V Turbo featured independent suspension all round. Up front, MacPherson struts and lower wishbones anchored to an auxiliary crossbeam with offset coil springs and anti-roll bar keep everything under control and make for a sporty but comfortable ride.

At the rear, we have trailing arms mounted on an auxiliary subframe fitted with coil springs and an anti-roll bar. With the engineering team following Paolo’s instructions “to get Fiat back where it should be” the weight distribution and balance of the Coupe are near perfect.

In typically Italian style only one braking system would do for the 20V Turbo. Brembo’s were fitted all round, then painted and lacquered in matching body colour.

As you can see from the images, the 4 spoke 16 inch alloy wheels have recently been powder coated and are immaculate, it the same time they were wrapped in brand new 205/50/16 rubber that are still so new they actually still have the stickers in place.

Did we say that this super 20V Turbo is literally ready to get in and drive home?  Well, it is and don’t be expecting to spend any money on it for some time, you’re too late, it has already been done.

Our view

Fiat 20V Turbo Coupes are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.  When the few that are around come to market there is usually considerable interest.

This example will be particularly sought after due to its 2 previous owners, fantastic maintenance record and full service history, plus that stunning colour combination, condition and looks.

Enjoy the summer sunshine with a car that is completely sorted and literally wants for nothing.  An exceptional car with a reasonable reserve that in our opinion will be such a great purchase.

As we mentioned above, we’ve had the pleasure very recently of marketing and selling other Fiat Coupes and this one really does match them in terms of quality and performance.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.
