The Subaru WRX (standing for ‘World Rally eXperimental’) exploded onto the car scene in 1992, immediately becoming one of the most sought-after, enthusiast performance cars.

Combining the practicality of a four-door body, the power of the turbocharged, flat-four engine, and incredible road holding provided by Subaru’s signature all-wheel-drive system, the WRX has become a proper modern classic and unbeatable rally monster.

Introduced in 2000, the model we have here, the Subaru WRX soon gained the affectionate nickname “Bugeye” for its characteristic round headlights and front fascia body style. Available as a saloon or station wagon, WRX was based on the second-generation Impreza model and offered globally. This model was presented with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, but the manual was the only choice for the true car aficionado.

The power came from a 2.0-litre, turbocharged flat-four engine, which developed 218 horsepower and 292 Nm of torque. Of course, as with all WRX models, this flat-four unit was highly tuneable, and the majority of owners decided to upgrade their cars to more power and performance. The Bugeye stayed in production until 2003, during which time around 40,000 examples were sold globally.

History

Imported to the UK back in 2010, this Subaru WRX was immediately fitted with the Prodrive Performance Pack (PPP) that was offered as a dealer option to all new UK models. This was probably one of the best upgrades that money can buy for the WRX and STi models.

Being the only modification fitted to this WRX those in the know will appreciate that there is much more that can be done to this if they are so inclined, our vendor felt it important to keep the car as standard in every other area, why try and improve what is arguably a car that is already perfect out of the box.

Twelve years of ownership has meant it is difficult for our vendor to part with the serious piece of machinery but life means that it is now time to let someone else enjoy it.

Arriving with an MOT that does not expire until December this year and all the previous MOTs since its UK arrival, together with a very comprehensive document pack with a mass of invoices showing nearly £9K of maintenance and servicing costs, and the V5.

Exterior

Finished in the Subaru’s signature hue of World Rally Mica Blue and riding on a set of 17-inch Speedline five-spoke alloy wheels, this Subaru WRX certainly looks the part.

On closer inspection you will see that the bodywork is showing its age with the most obvious evidence around the rear wheel arches which are in need of attention but are not affecting the status of the MOT.

The offside rear sill panel has been replaced recently with the obligatory underseal applied to protect it, the painted sill cover has been refitted so it does not stand out too much but a little TLC spent around the bodywork will present this car as it should.  What you would expect from a 22 year old car.

Without labouring too much on the point the bodywork is actually very solid, as most of these well-built Japanese cars were in the 90s/2000s, and is a fantastic base to turn into a wonderful example of what are becoming very sought after cars.  What we can say is that it is priced accordingly with a very reasonable reserve.

Interior

Much like the exterior, the grey cloth interior has a few areas that are showing some age, mostly around the bolster area of the drivers seat, again, as expected from a 22 year old car. Our vendor has shared that everything works as it should, anything that needed attention during his ownership has been sorted such as the usual drivers side window which works as it should.

The fact the seats are a little worn really has no bearing on the comfort when you lower yourself in and grab that Momo steering wheel. Those that have driven these fine machines know how the late Colin McCrae must have felt when he was winning all those World Rally Championships. We suspect that the crescendo of emotion reaches its climax when turning the ignition key and slipping it into drive….  On that note, the pièce de resistance of this Subaru WRX..

Engine

The engine is the EJ20 2.0-litre, turbocharged flat-four engine, which developed 218 horsepower and 292 Nm of torque. Of course, as with all WRX models, and we said earlier, this flat-four unit was highly tuneable, and the majority of owners decided to upgrade their cars to more power and performance.  As we mentioned, our vendor chose to stop at the Prodrive Performance Pack so we can be confident that the engine has had an easy life and has not been over modified to an inch of its life.

With 195,000 km on the clocks which equates to about 120,000 miles, the bulletproof flat four is only just run in and with regular servicing will go on for many more lives.  Again, if it is your intention is to turn it into a 400hp beast then this example is a fantastic starting point. Our vendor has also advised that the cambelt was changed in 2015 at c70,000 miles.

Wheels Tyres Suspension and other

The previously refurbished  gold 17inch Speedline wheels are holding up well as they are all in good condition with only a small amount of corrosion showing here and there, the common kerb damage is remarkably absent though.  The tyres are all in very good condition and have been replaced as and when needed some as recently as March this year according to the invoice pack.

In terms of the drivetrain, what can be said about a car with so much Rally pedigree, if you have got this far down the review then you know exactly what these impressive machines are capable of.

As previously mentioned, our vendor has not held back when it comes to the running gear and expressed that it all works as it should, with recent invoices showing a couple of new coil springs, and a plethora of invoices from 2018 until more recently showing Brake disks and pads all round, bushes, wheel bearings, anti-roll bar links, front ball joints and caliper and brake services a plenty, all this invoices lead to the assumption that the running gear on this WRX has really had a pampered life.

Our view

Although the bodywork is showing its age and could do with some TLC, the very heart of this car, the running gear and engine, are really what makes these unbelievable ground breaking cars the stars that they are.

With so much maintenance and love in all the right places this Subaru WRX is a perfect base to produce a very special example indeed. Priced appropriately, the winning bidder will bag a very decent car for them to get in and drive as a daily or should they choose to, build a monster rally inspired rocket-ship of a car, take your pick!

Vehicle Location: North Yorkshire YO21 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.
