Description

  • 5.2 litre V10 Lamborghini engine
  • 450bhp
  • 0-60mph in five seconds!
  • Excellent condition

  • Amazing value

Driving the thunderous Audi S8 V10 is a marvellous experience.

Audi’s renowned four wheel drive needs no introduction. Class leading innovation such as ceramic brake discs and adaptive air suspension, meant the third generation S8 was a spectacular success.

When Audi pinched the Lamborghini Gallardo engine from the Italian sports car manufacturer, it enlarged it from 5.0ltrs to 5.2ltrs. Along with other adaptations by the Germans, for the flagship S8, things were about to get really tasty!

At £90,000 plus back then, the beast of an S8 was out of reach for most mere mortals like us. Now, at a fraction of that price they are stunning value.

Engine and Transmission

The Gallardo based V10 in this S8 has covered c.140,000 miles. But backed up with Audi’s legendary engineering and a good service history, this S8 supercar is just stretching its legs.

It has near F1 production values, with performance to match.

The engine in the Gen 3 S8, has an aluminium crankcase, with forged and strengthened crankshaft and con rods giving it near bomb proof reliability. The cylinder head is fitted with double overhead cams with four valves per cylinder, chain driven, featuring variable valve timing on inlet and exhaust valves for maximum performance. That is topped off by twin variable inlet manifold, with twin throttle valves and Audi’s direct fuel injection system known as FSI (Fuel Stratified Injection). I wish we were expert enough to know what FSI is in German, but hey, you get what you pay for!

All that adds up to an amazing 450bhp through the Quattro drive system. Propelling the S8 from 0-60 in 5.1 seconds with a ‘limited’ top speed of 155mph. There are myriad reports of these being de-limited, extending the top speed to 170mph. We don’t think our limited under-cracker budget would cover that. Good luck if you do though.

Our vendor Kenny had the last ‘big’ service carried out just two months ago. With a couple of extras he didn’t get a great deal of change back from two grand.

He says “it drives and sounds wonderful”. Have a listen to the videos. We think you’ll agree.

All that energy is mated to sporty six speed ZF tiptronic automatic transmission. The S8 has the  Dynamic Shift Programme(DSP) and sport mode, with steering wheel mounted paddle-shifters.

The later Gen 3 S8’s like this one had the Torsen T-3 asymmetric dynamic centre differential, with a default torque distribution of 40 percent to the front axle and 60 percent to the rear. If the road conditions change, the mechanical differential responds, diverting up to 85 percent of power to the rear wheels, and as much as 65 percent to the front wheels. It is a masterpiece.

Outside

The exterior and bodywork are described as “excellent” by our vendor. The very good, wide and close in, photographs do nothing to dissuade us of that view. We can see what looks possibly like the odd touch-in on the front bumper, if we really zoom. But equally they could be dead flies that didn’t get themselves out of the way quick enough. We’re happy to ask if you’d like us to. Generally, it looks great.

The close-in shots of the wheels, show they are in generally very good condition. There are couple of pot-hole cuffs – why do we pay soooo much Road Tax – but they are minor. The alloys look fine as does the expensive rubber that sits around them.

There are no cuffs ‘n scuffs to the bumper corners, this car has been cared for. The sunroof all works as do all the electronic gizmos and toys in the car, we are told.

The outside of the Gen 3 S8 is packed with innovations, many of which are still only found on very high end cars. Bi-Xenon headlamps, rain sensing wipers, proximity sensors, the list just keeps going. Yep, they all work.

Interior

What a smashing interior, again, packed with toys, all of which work. Did we say this car had been looked after properly? It has.

As you might expect for a £90 grand car, the quality of materials, fit and finish are excellent.

The Audi S8 V10 distinguishes itself from the standard car thanks to carbon fibre, aluminium trim and suede-like Alcantara that covers most of the interior. All of it in good condition.

The majority of functions are controlled from what Audi calls its Multi Media Interface (MMI). It  allows the main functions, like stereo (which is the factory option Bang & Olufsen if you don’t mind) and satellite navigation, to be managed using the same controller, reducing the number of buttons.

Numerous features make everyone in this cabin space feel special, not least the driver. The stand-outs are things such motor-assisted doors which pull themselves closed; key-less entry and ignition; four zone climate control; TV tuner; finger print activated memory settings; voice recognition, the exhaustive list, is, well blimming exhausting to be honest.

This S8 comes with the original Audi handbooks, because it’s been looked after, so, when you win, you can spend hours reading and playing with all the toys.

What is it like to drive?

Slip into the drivers seat, let the power assisted door close and enjoy where you are. Just for a bit. Shoulders up. Arms out. Twist the key and the V10 flicks into life instantly. It will tick-over just loud enough to let you know you’re sitting in something special. Smile.

Slide the ‘box into D and feather the throttle. It glides off from rest. As the speed picks up, the exhaust note almost disappears. You’re in an executive saloon, it’s as quiet as a church mouse.

You’ll be struck by the ride, it is exceptionally good. You’d never guess the S8 is running on 20-inch wheels with aggressive sports rubber and adaptive air suspension that lowers the ride height by 20mm when it needs to hug the ground as the 450 horses start galloping.

Now, nudge the gear lever, activate the paddles on the steering wheel and press the throttle. Through the mixture of V10 Gallardo engine and Quattro set-up, the delivery is beautifully judged. There’s plenty of punchy torque as the revs rise. Then the exhausts start to deliver their tuneful off-beat howl, the S8  is in its magical stride. Smile some more.

The body feels enormously well tethered to the tarmac and when you start to test the limits of the S8’s grip and composure, the S8 simply shrugs its shoulders and gets stuck in. Grip is very solid and the S8 manages to feel both utterly secure and yet nicely supple. Just keep smiling.

Oh, we nearly forget, the ceramic brakes work too. Perfectly. It really is a great supercar.

Verdict

Guilty. Oh wait. Wrong place.

We are still going guilty though. The S8 would be our guilty pleasure. It should be yours too. In fact it can be. Our vendor needs it gone. What an opportunity. In five years-time, good, looked after V10 S8s like this are going to be double the dirt cheap money they are today. Don’t say we didn’t tell you.
