The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Cabriolet Sport is one of the era-defining sports cars.

If you are after a 911, whether you are new to the marque or not, you don’t need to be told why you need one.

There’s no sound quite like that whirring, six-cylinder flat six planted just aft of the rear axle.

There’s no other shape so pure and simple.

There are few cars that have been as successful on racetracks around the world. Porsche’s venerable icon is one of perhaps a dozen designs that, more than anything, simply says “sports car.”

In Cabriolet form it is superb and a superbly practical classic car.

History

Our vendor has owned this 911 for around 12 months. He loves it. He is selling because he is starting up a new business in the hospitality sector on the South Coast and knows how all-consuming that will be and the Porsche will just there, unused.

He had been looking for the “right one” for some time. After kissing a lot of frogs, he finally found this Carrera Sport Cabriolet in a small private collection in Scotland. The storage unit was apparently packed with similar high-end classics like this Porsche and Ferraris. When he saw the 911 and drove it, he knew it was the one.

We’re not exactly sure how long it had been there, but a small amount of digging will reveal that precisely. From the DVLA records and our vendor’s recollection, it is thought it was in the collection for around four or five years. The MOT records show that this classic 911 has covered just 5,925 miles in sixteen years!

Our vendor immediately serviced the Porsche at the cost of c£2,500. Ouch! It was worth every penny and he has enjoyed every minute of the 911 since.

This is not a ‘Garage Queen’ now, the vendor has stated that the Porsche is in regular weekly use.

Exterior and Hood

The Grand Prix White bodywork on the 911 looks good.

Being an original UK Sport version, this 911 has the additional benefit of black-lipped spoiler at the front and the turbo style whale tail at the rear, all intact and looking good.

The Carrera legend along the flanks is as it should be and the vendor describes the condition of the exterior galvanised body of this 911 as “solid and reliable Porsche classic” and adds “Bodywork is in good condition”.

The cabriolet roof all operates as it should, is in good condition and in contrasting blue makes the car look even more striking with the top up.

There is some slight paint bubbling on the front bumper, the vendor states that this can be rectified by a ‘Smart’ repair for between £160 and £200.

Engine and Transmission.

As we said at the top, if you’re thinking of buying a classic 911 Carrera, you’ll know what’s what, but just to be complete, here are a couple of headlines about this model.

This 1988 version runs the larger 3.2 flat six with a power output of 228bhp, which will propel the Cabriolet Sport from 0-60 in 5.4secs and wail on like a banshee up to 150mph it you want it to. All that drive goes through the updated G50 Getrag six speed transmission.

On completing the purchase the first thing our vendor did was have a 12,000 mile service carried out. That buys peace of mind for any new owner. Alongside that, we are told there are ‘stacks’ of records in the file, which can be made available on request.

A new starter motor and CV boots along with “bearings and bushes” were replaced at that service.

Our vendor asked for a professional opinion of the engine and transmission at that time, he was advised “the desirable G50 gear box has been assessed by a Porsche specialist as being very strong, as is the engine.”

The images provided by the vendor support the condition described.

Interior

This 911 is all original inside and much the better for it. The carpet on the driver side is described to us as “weathered”. The original UK Sport package seats are all still intact. When we asked, the vendor advises us there is no damage or tears to the seats, “but they are 30 years old”. He has provided images of these and more are available to bidders if required.

The interior, as you can see, presents well and we’ve no reason to think there are any issues in this area, in fact quite the opposite. Our vendor has had the electric seat motors replaced and he tells us details like the electric mirrors and hood all work as they should. He even has the original Porche Head until but has replaced it with a Period looking DAB and USB Blaupunkt head unit.

The original showroom Thatcham central locking alarm and immobiliser was removed and replaced with an up to date Cobra system with a global locking system, that also remotely closes the cabriolet roof.

There is a small tear to the material on the driver’s side door card. This can be easily repaired.

Additional information

We’ll leave this bit to our vendor.

“Fitted at the factory was a Porsche sports exhaust and this sounds great.
Bodywork is in good condition and the interior is a good standard for its age and mileage.

There have been 8 owners, that might put some buyers off, however it’s over 30 years old.
There is plenty of paperwork with the vehicle, it does not have a complete service history, however it has been cherished by all of its owners and still retains the original books and folder.

This is going to be almost free motoring if looked after. Very recently professionally detailed at a cost of £500 because I like my cars right”.

Our view

Our vendor spent some time searching for the right car.

Finding an original UK spec 3.2 Carrera Sport Cabriolet, G50 equipped that has a good document pack and covered 5,925 miles since 2006 and was previously scooped up by a knowledgably collector is as a close as it gets to the right one, we think.

Prices for top end Porsches flattened in the last couple of years, but in our view the market had over-heated, driven by speculators. 2021 saw prices of 80s 911 Carrera Sport Cabriolets trending upward, with a number breaking through the £50,000+ price point.

Our vendor has been very realistic in setting his reserve. We anticipate this classic Porsche 911 will finish in the £45,000 – £50,000 price band.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classic cars.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.
