Iconic looks, endless charm and a barrel full of fun. Arguably the most loved generation of VW Campers is the split screen version. Here’s one that someone else has done all the hard work on.

History

  • German built
  • Restored
  • First registered 13 May 1965

1947 was the start of campervans. From watching motorised trolleys bombing around the Wolfsburg VW factory in an importer from the Netherlands, Ben Pom doodled a variation of a Beetle van. A year later Heinz Nordhoff oversaw Volkswagen. He developed the drawing and ran with it. At the Geneva Motor Show in November 1949 the first VW van was launched. The first generation of VW buses ran from 1947-67, the ‘Splitty Years’. The market loved them. Demand soared and the rest is history.

We don’t need to tell you how cool a classic VW Splitty Camper is. Even a trip to the dentist is fun. Everywhere you go, you will be greeted by smiling faces, nods and looks of admiration.

Outside

  • Classic Barn door on the left hand side
  • Mango Green
  • Seagull Grey
  • Colour co-ordinated bumpers and wheels
  • Fisheye front indicators
  • Small rear lights

It looks a treat. A real treat.

Our vendor, Jackie, tells us, “The VW Camper has had a complete restoration and was fully repainted in Mango Green / Seagull Grey. The Underside has been treated with textured Raptor finish and stone-chip protection”

The glass and rubbers all look good – we’re told it’s original glass and the rubbers have been replaced. The panel gaps are even and consistent. The original style domed chrome wheel trims are another rare treat adding to the authenticity.

There is a lot to like about the VW Camper. The fold back barn doors are one of the best features. They make the splitty so versatile. Just imagine travelling down to the beach on a summer afternoon, parking up, uncorking the wine, sitting inside, with those doors open and relaxing as you’re watching the sunset.

Inside

While the outside will make you and everyone else smile, the ingenious and unique set-up inside is what this VW Camper is all about. Practical, versatile, fun and stylish.

There are loads of images in the Gallery, so we’ll just pick up a few highlights for you.

  • This VW comes with a stunning interior
  • Fully re-upholstered
  • A Rusty Lee full rock ‘n’ roll bed
  • Matching Rusty Lee buddy seat
  • New fridge
  • New double gas burner
  • Bespoke cabinet units finished in oak veneer
  • Off white Edelweiss flooring and underlay
  • New headlining
  • Table with chrome island and central pedestal – stored away behind bed when not in use
  • Thermal insulation and silent coat sound deadening fitted
  • Six new seat belts
  • There is even a USB port

Up front there are lovely leather, with white piping, seats. The steering wheel is original, and the oh-so simple, but ultra-stylish ‘dashboard’ is in tip top condition.

The opening quarter lights are just a design icon. Much copied, never really matched

If you were still in any doubt about the quality of the interior, just take a look at areas such as the soft furnishings and the headlining

It is all there, making the inside of this splitty an enviable place to be. Large amounts of money have been spent on this interior. And we do mean large.

Mechanicals

The VW T1 split screen campers are simplicity themselves and all the better for it.

  • New reconditioned 1500cc engine
  • Various ancillaries on the engine look to be new too
  • Petrol pump, distributor, etc.
  • It comes with an alternator replacing the dynamo, a great upgrade
  • Bilstein shock absorbers

The VW Camper has been “completely rewired with a new fuse box and a new loom”. Main and leisure batteries have been fitted with isolators. In the rear is a fire suppression kit.

Our view

If you are looking for a VW T1 split screen Camper that has many of the charismatic original features but has some subtle upgrades that make it practical and user friendly, in an exceptional condition, you’ve found one of the best available right now.

As if that wasn’t enough, our very sensible vendor is auctioning with NO RESERVE so highest bid will win this fab Splitty.

Best of all, a classic splitty like this one, will give you memories that will live with you forever. You cannot put a price on that.
