We often hear the term iconic being bandied about and wonder if it really is that iconic? Well, talk to anyone in the USA about “Chevy” sedans and you’ll hear that term mentioned over and over; in this instance we completely agree.

This fantastic example of the 1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe  4-Door Town Sedan, with its built-in trunk, helped boost Chevrolet’s sales over Ford – by nearly 100,000 vehicles. There were 129,000 produced of this particular model. President Franklin D. Roosevelt owned the same model of car in 1939.

History

Unfortunately, there is not a great deal of paperwork with the car but then there never really is when vehicles are imported and are as old as this one.

Our vendor imported the Chevrolet Master Deluxe Sedan last year but has reluctantly decided to let it go, purely due to his collection growing further and running out of space. With all the import paperwork taken care of and a V5 being issued, it will be an easy transition to its new owner.  Obviously, the Chevrolet is MOT exempt so it will not come with an MOT although our vendor has had it checked to MOT standard and advises that it is “running perfectly and is in great condition.”

Exterior

Although the body was basically the same as the 1938 models, the 1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe Sedans had a longer hood, as well as redesigned fenders and wheels, giving the cars a longer, lower look than previous models.

Our example here is extremely impressive. In Memphis Blue with no rust, dents or obvious damage to the bodywork anywhere. The windows are all armour-plated glass. This is a piece of automobile history that is now over eighty years old and as such it will not be described as concours condition. However, if you want a solid example, then here we have it. The chrome bumpers are in great condition and need no attention.

Satisfy yourself and take a good look at the images in the photo gallery to set your mind at rest. The bodywork is impressive, it has clearly been restored during its lifetime and has since been treated to plenty of love and affection. Eighty-year-old cars simply don’t look this good without being looked after. Even the door handles and locks all work correctly, not the usual worn and unreliable locks that are usually found on classic cars of this era. All the windows work as they should.

The underneath is equally impressive, with the floor being rust free and as solid as the bodywork. As with all classic cars there is very slight surface hydrated iron oxide (as the professionals will say) but it is literally just that.

Interior

Climbing into the cab of the Chevrolet Master Deluxe Sedan you will notice that the colour combination matches the exterior and is presented very well. The vendor has shared that everything works as it should, including the gauges, speedometer and trip meters, lights, horn, indicators – which have been subtly added and fitted to the bumpers – and so on…

The original bench seats look fantastic, although there is a repair section fitted to the front that is ever so slightly off colour and a small twenty-millimetre tear on the rear, but these really do not detract from what is a very nice period interior. With decent replacement carpets fitted, the door pads and roof lining are all matching and showing no rips or tears. We encourage you to look at the images and see for yourself just how good the interior looks contrasted against the Memphis Blue bodywork.

Engine

Step on start button, 3.5 litre, second generation, 4 bearing crankshaft 216 cid Six Cylinder 85hp engine, which is mated to the original manual 3 speed gearbox. There was no Syncromesh fitted to first gear on cars in the 1930s – it fires into life first time; as you would expect with a new 6-volt battery having been fitted recently.

The smooth straight six runs engine impressively well and has been extremely reliable in its current ownership. Our vendor has shared that it has excellent oil pressure and was recently given some fresh oil, the original Carter single down-draft carburettor is still in place and running as reliably as ever. It has even been fitted with a full stainless steel exhaust system that will not need attention for many years to come.

Wheels Tyres Suspension and other

This Chevrolet Master Deluxe Sedan is fitted with four new tyres, the wheels look fantastic in Memphis blue with their very solid, clean and original chrome hubcaps.

The brakes have been overhauled with new shoes fitted all round. If you have driven any cars from this era, you will know that it is not unusual to experience the feeling that the big straight six engine far outweighs the ability of their stopping power – usually to the extent that your heart is often in your mouth when needing to stop urgently – but not with this example. Stopping true and straight with loads of bite, you will be impressed with the overhaul that has been completed on the brakes.

With no knocks, rattles, or squeals coming from the suspension and being described as mechanically sound, you will be impressed with how well an eighty plus year old car can drive. You are in for a treat if you thought this big Chevy was going to drive like a bag of nails, it doesn’t.

Our view

With all the important bits rebuilt or overhauled, the winning bidder will be taking home a classic Chevrolet Master Deluxe Sedan that will likely want for nothing for quite some time. Show it, use it daily or even turn it in to a wedding car, the options are endless.

Good luck bidding! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: Romford, Essex RM1– it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

 Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
