A beautiful and rare Series II factory special order SWB station wagon. This Land Rover was comprehensively renovated with the objective of keeping as close to the original factory specification as possible. Two owners’ club officers have seen this Land Rover and reportedly commented “It is one of the best they have seen”.

The work was meticulously completed by a professional engineer. It comes with a file of invoices, receipts and photographic history of the work carried out.

Background

A decade after the Series I was launched, the Series II was introduced and ran from 1958 to 1961. This was the first Land Rover to receive the attention of Chief Stylist David Bache. He produced the now familiar barrel side waistline, with a wider track and improved design. The Series II was the first vehicle to use the famous 2.25 litre petrol engine.

The Station Wagons were the first expansion of the range. They came complete with a Tropical Roof; this kept the interior cool in hot weather and reduced condensation in cold weather. Vents allowed improved ventilation too. Based on the same chassis and drivetrains as the standard vehicles, Station Wagons were marketed differently and advertised in separate brochures.

Who better to tell the story of this amazing Land Rover than our vendor in his own words:

  • 1960 Land Rover Series II
  • Genuine SWB Station Wagon 88inch
  • Confirmed with Heritage Certificate
  • Chassis No 141100538
  • Engine No 151103347
  • Manufactured September 1960
  • 7 Seats
  • 2¼ petrol engine
  • Overdrive

I purchased the vehicle in July 2018 as a retirement project. This was a running car that needed some tidying up and I thought some welding. I am not a Mechanic, but I do have an Engineering background.

I then decided to fully restore the vehicle to as near to original within my ability; I ordered a replacement galvanized chassis, stamped with original chassis number from Richards Chassis.

This was then solution washed, painted, sealed, all new suspension bushes, springs, and shock absorbers. The axle was rebuilt, new brakes and pipes, new exhaust system, full engine, gearbox and overdrive service, new clutch. Original specification new Autosparks wiring harness.

The bulkhead A posts were replaced and Jigged. Complete new floor panels, New Seat box, replacement inner wings and new Genuine outer wings. Replacement rear door.

Rebuilt front panel, new headlights and indicators and Steering wheel refurbished.

I purchased reconditioned Lucas individual wiper motors, all new bodyworks seals and rubbers, new window channels.

All bodywork and paintwork have been professionally done. I now consider that mechanically and bodily the vehicle is as near to original condition as I could do. I have had all seats completely refurbished and recovered; new door cards, & interior all done with genuine replacement Grey Elephant Hide material from Exmore trim. New Hydura sound deadening.

Two Series II Club officers have seen the vehicle, and both have said it is one of the best they have seen. And it has been shown several Land Rover events: Peterborough, Newark and the Gaydon Motor Museum, and also back at the Solihull factory. Last year it was used by a magazine for a photo shoot, and it has been in a couple of Land Rover magazines

I have hundreds of photos of the strip-down & re-build, and thousands of pounds worth of receipts.

Summary

If you’re hunting for the best possible Series II Land Rover, your search might be over. Whilst all the hard yards have been done, this is still an authentic Land Rover with its heart and soul intact.

Our vendor’s son, who is employed as a professional paint technician for JLR repainted this Land Rover. We can only imagine the care he has taken.

We’d be genuinely surprised to see a better Series II. Land Rover values are all over the place and to be honest very difficult to understand.

Our vendor has reserved this classic sensibly. Based on our experience, we expect this Land Rover to finish in the upper region of £18,000 – £24,000. And it’s worth every penny.  As the saying goes; find another one.

Vehicle Location: Nuneaton, Warwickshire CV10 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendors.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
