The legendary Land Rover Series II was first released in 1958 at the Amsterdam Motor Show, improving on the decade-old Series I model that was first released in 1948 at the same event.

The Series II featured, amongst other things, a redesigned bodyshell with a curved shoulder line.

Many Land Rover fans assert that the Series IIA is one of the ‘best’ models. With the various improvements, they are certainly one of the most popular all-rounder Land Rovers.

Background

This lovely Land Rover Series II comes to market after over 20 years ownership and many man hours rebuilding it from the chassis upwards. Now he is moving house and tidying up his affairs, our vendor has decided it is time to let it go.

  • First registered 11th November 1964
  • Chassis Number 24117714
  • 88” SWB
  • Owned by our vendor since 2003
  • 8 Former Keepers
  • Mileage showing 13,156

Outside

Although we understand the Series IIA was rebuilt over the last 20 years, the Land Rover looks bright as a button. The paint appears rather neat along with the alloy external fixings.

The SWB Safari style Land Rovers rarely come to market and this one comes to market with so much work having been carried out over the years.

Fitted with a galvanised chassis and bulkhead that has been painted black to keep those with sticky fingers away. Our vendor has shared that the original bulkhead is available should the winning bidder want it.

Look through the images and you will see that the Safari presents very well considering it was resprayed by our vendor over ten years ago. You will notice the offside front wing is a different shade of green; our vendor is unsure why as it was painted at the same time as the rest of the vehicle so believes it to be a paint reaction of some sort.

The Safari roof which was painted around the same time has also stood the test of time and still presents well.

The glass is all present and looks original with the wheels all presenting well with good rubber all round.

As expected with a galvanised chassis the underneath presents well with no rotten areas giving any concern.

Inside

The inside of any Land Rover can be considered spartan. This one looks to be generally un-modified and all intact.

The three front seats are in great condition, the rear side seats are just as good. The gauges and the steering wheel are original. Our vendor shared that everything works as it should – but to be honest there really isn’t that much to go wrong.

Again, check out the images and see for yourself, a well-presented example of what is now a sixty-year-old vehicle. Not bad, not bad at all.

Mechanicals

  • Four-cylinder 2.25 litre petrol engine
  • Original steel wheels
  • Good tyres
  • New Brakes
  • New Parabolic Suspension
  • Webber Carburettor
  • New Clutch
  • Stainless Steel Exhaust
  • New Electrics including loom.
  • Tow Bar and electrics work

We’re told by our vendor: “The Land Rover runs well, the gearbox has no issues, no crunching or grinding and the clutch has been replaced”. The engine bay looks clean and tidy. There is a video of how it sounds running too.

Again, with plenty of work carried out over the years we have a very good example that really doesn’t need anything doing; literally get in and drive it.

The 2.25 Engine is a 5-bearing unit that was in the Safari when our vendor purchased it; he cannot confirm it to be the original engine from factory.

  • The plugs, leads, coil and battery have all been replaced
  • The Dynamo has been rebuilt and the loom replaced.
  • The gearbox has been removed, given the once over and then refitted with a new clutch and slave cylinder. Our vendor has shared there is a slight noise in four-wheel drive, but it all works as it should and is “as smooth as silk”.
  • The brakes have been overhauled with the drums measured and deemed to be fine, the shoes, cylinders and pipes were replaced though
  • The suspension has also been given an overhaul with new parabolic springs and shocks all round
  • The steering was given the once over but with no movement in the drop bars and the vehicle driving and steering correctly it was deemed not to need anything other than a quick clean up
  • Lastly a stainless-steel exhaust has been fitted.

Clearly our vendor has spent hundreds of hours and plenty of cash bringing this Safari to its current condition with literally 200 miles travelled since the major mechanical works.

Summary

Why are these so loved and sought after? The Series IIA is thought by many enthusiasts to be the most hardy and best Series model created. It is also the type of classic Land Rover that features strongly in the public’s perception. Major films and television productions often immortalised the Series IIA model.

With so many of this era of Land Rovers surviving, it is obvious that these rugged little 4x4s were built well from the factory. This one has had so much love and attention that we suspect it will keep going for another 60 years

For all sorts of reasons this Series IIA is interesting and special in equal measure. If you’re looking for one, take a long hard look at this one, more so given its very tempting reserve.

Vehicle Location: Swansea, Powys SA9 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendors.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
