It’s said that the best things come in small packages. The diminutive, iconic, fun Fiat 500 confirms that. Bulging with character and great fun to drive, the Fiat 500 is an absolute blast. The best small classic car? Probably.

History

This particular Fiat 500L was first registered on 12th January 1970. Originally from the province of Ascoli Piceno in the Marche region of Italy, our vendor imported the Fiat to the UK in January 2023.

Our vendor tells us this;

The car has been previously restored. This would definitely explain the condition of the car which is extremely good, so good that it last week passed its first UK MOT even though it technically doesn’t need one.

Externally, the paint work is in very good condition. The steel wheels have a very small amount (specks) of surface rust. The underside is in a very solid condition indeed. One of the main reasons we wanted to get a new MOT before sale was because sometimes there can be expensive issues lying in wait in regards to rot. Our mechanic was shocked as to how clean it was.

Internally, the biscuit coloured vinyl interior complemented with its new red carpeting both in good condition as are the sunroof and window seals.

In all a very honest, useable and presentable 500 which is waiting to be enjoyed by its new owner.”

Our vendor has also advised us that the MOT showed that “the steering linkage ball joint dust cover is damaged or deteriorated but preventing the ingress of dirt – front” and “steering linkage deformed but serviceable – front (bushes worn)”. The MOT certificate can be viewed in the gallery.

Outside

  • Bianco White
  • Previously restored
  • Looking very good indeed

This Fiat 500L is a head-turner and it’s compact size makes it easy for anyone to jump in and buzz about in.

At 53 years old there is the odd wrinkle, as you’d expect. But our vendor has highlighted those in the Image Gallery for you.

Inside

At just under 3 metres long, the Fiat 500 is surprisingly spacious inside.  The car’s cabin offers ample room for passengers, with comfortable seats that provide very adequate support.

The Fiat 500 Lusso was very much the upmarket model introduced in 1968

  • It was much better trimmed throughout
  • New instrument binnacle
  • Upholstered pleated door cards
  • Door pockets
  • The previous rubber floor covering was replaced with decent carpet, Rosso Red in this case

Mechanically

The Fiat 500 is a marvel of engineering. Its air-cooled, twin-cylinder 499.5cc engine delivers around 22 bhp, but feels much more. It is more than enough to power the lightweight little Fiat 500.

The four-speed manual transmission, with reverse, is precise but may take a bit of practice getting used to as it is different from a modern car as the gearboxes were not synchronised. You will get used it quickly though and doing so is all part of the enjoyment of owning these lovely classics.

  • Independent suspension all round
  • Rear mounted engine and transmission
  • Air-cooled, overhead-valve twin at 499.5cc

On the road, the Fiat 500L is a delight. Its small size and light weight make it incredibly agile, allowing you to easily weave through traffic and make quick turns. The rear mounted engine gives great balance and stability to an otherwise light little classic, making it feel planted. The Fiat 500 is also surprisingly fuel efficient too. The massive bonus is of course that roof.

We are advised that the mechanical condition of the Fiat is “fully functional” and the electrical system is “in perfect working order”.

Summary

The Fiat 500 L is a true classic of its era. Its iconic design, imaginative interior, and impressive mechanical capabilities made it a popular choice among drivers who wanted a car that was both practical and stylish and fun and easy to maintain. That remains true all these years later. A fun, engaging classic. Easy to own. Easy to drive. Above all easy to love. Which you as the proud new owner will. Good luck bidding!
