Description

The Yamaha HS1 is the very essence of classic motorcycle riding. Iconic. Rare. But above all, laugh out loud fun. Is this HS1 as close to stepping back into a 1970s dealership and riding off on a new bike as you can get? You decide.

Background

Our vendor Andrew has a small assortment of cars and bikes that we are handling for him. He describes himself as ‘wanting things right’. The condition of this Yamaha certainly ticks that box.

  • Year of manufacture 1970
  • Understood to have been a US import
  • First registration in the UK 1st April 2023
  • Aside from being ridden for a dozen or so miles it has had little use

Overview

This charming Yamaha is remarkable, not just because of collectable rarity and smashing condition. With its peppy 90cc engine, the HS1 is the smallest twin engine produced. Each of its pistons are about the same diameter as the face of a wristwatch. Do not be fooled by its diminutive nature, it was equipped with big bike features.

  • Autolube oil injected, two-stroke engine
  • Twin carbs
  • Original twin chrome air filters
  • Slash cut twin exhausts
  • Rubber mounted steel duplex frame
  • Full instrumentation
  • Speedo
  • Rev counter
  • Five speed gear box
  • Gaitored front forks
  • Twin rear shocks
  • Alloy rims with chrome laced spokes
  • Full chrome mudguards
  • Full-size seat, roomy enough for a pillion
  • Passenger footrests

The lightweight package weighing in at under 200Ibs delivers an engaging and fun ride. In an age of bikes dominated by 200bhp/175mph superbikes, the HS1 is a welcome reminder to why so many of us got into motorcycles; pure enjoyment.

Summary

This Yamaha is all about bringing nostalgia and old skool pleasure to any journey. The Yamaha HS1 is a sought-after gem among collectors and enthusiasts. Its enduring popularity confirms the quality and timelessness of its design and the joy it brings to those who appreciate the simplicity and purity of vintage riding.

Vehicle Location: Crewe, Cheshire CW1 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor
