Originally launched in 1961 with the 1100 A-Series engine, ADO16’s success saw it become Britain’s best-selling car. BMC produced the model in several badge-engineered variants from within the BMC over-arching brand. The Wolseley is considered to be by far the best and most sought after.

This one has a back story. And unusually, aside from some factual specs about the Wolseley, we think the owner’s story and his transparent images in the Gallery say far more than we can.

Our vendor writes:

“I bought ” Edward” just over a year ago. The plan was for my wife and I to go gently touring about in our retirement years.

Unfortunately, this did not happen as the car required a lot of work to make it roadworthy and my wife was killed in a road traffic accident before it was finished.

I did however complete all the necessary repairs which included but were not limited to engine mountings, steering rack and joints, and front displacers.

I fitted new carpets and had most of the chrome plated. The brakes were sorted, and new pads fitted. Five new tyres are now on the car.

It is a pretty little car and always draws attention.

The car looks better in the pictures than it is if you look really closely. I had planned to get some paintwork done this year. Wheel arch lips are a bit flaky for example.

Not rusty, just not quite right.

The engine and gearbox are both good. The car has only done just over 25,000 miles. I think it was hidden away for many years. I would like the car to go to someone who will appreciate it as I have sadly lost the enthusiasm for it”.

Additionally, he told us whilst the mileage cannot be warranted vendor states that everything about the car suggests the mileage is genuine and he thinks it had been hidden away for many years in dry storage. The MOT history shows that it hasn’t done many miles since 2005 with the first online test certificate showing 18k miles. The car will be supplied with a shed full of spare parts also, included in these spares is a new exhaust and a new thermostat.

Our view

Reports from the reliable Wolseley Register suggest there could be fewer than 57 MkII 1300s left on the road. Spacious, comfortable and enjoyable to drive, it’s no surprise they are so popular.

We cannot recall the last time we saw one, let alone had one for sale. These are a rare treat.

A super, scarce, easy to enjoy very practical classic. Don’t miss it.

Vehicle Location: Kelso, Roxburghshire, TD5 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendors.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
