It’s the summer of 1966, the Hollies are playing on the radio, there’s a tin of Spam in the cool box and you’re ready to hit the road in your brand-new camper. Sounds ace, doesn’t it? And it most probably was! The Bedford CA Dormobile hit the streets of the UK in 1950’s and gave the British public the chance to discover a whole new lifestyle! Years later, and the Bedford CA continues to evoke thoughts of retro wanderlust.

Here we have a wonderfully original 1966 Bedford CA Romany Dormobile Camper Van, looking somewhat sorry for itself.

Owned by our vendor since 1995, he purchased the camper for family outings when his children were young and could fit in the top bunk beds! PNK 123D retains all the original fixtures and fittings including gas cooker, wash basin, wardrobe, cupboards and meal table.

The seating for 4/5 cleverly swivels and collapses for meals around the table or for sleeping with a double bed and two bunks in the pop-up roof. Although rather frayed around the edges and with dings and surface rust here and there, this camper van has oodles of character. Recently recommissioned and with a very recent MOT, you need to look beyond the drab exterior and the uninviting interior to see the potential that this memory maker has.

Recommissioning has included;

• Brake overhaul (new master brake cylinder, new front and rear brake shoes and cylinders)
• Electrical overhaul (new battery, points, spark plugs, regulator and dynamo)
• New top radiator hose
• New fuel hoses
• Fuel tank clean
• New choke cable/button
• New pedal rubber covers

The door rollers were replaced in 2002. There is a thick history file with many service and parts invoices, tax disks going back to 1980, MOT certificates back to 1993, old logbooks and insurance documents, an original Dormobile 8-page colour brochure, an Instruction Book for Bedford CAS and CAL Models and a Vauxhall Service Training Manual for the Bedford Series CA.

Ready to use and improve, this Bedford may not be the most handsome, but it’s personality sure makes up for what it lacks in the looks department. These Bedford CAs are usually heavily restored and modified, this one oozes originality. Realistically reserved to find a new owner. Forget the Tardis, this machine will transport you right back to the sixties. Hop aboard!
