Portfolio The much under-rated MG Metro

Since the MG Metro was released I have been a massive fan of them. Sadly during their time in production I never owned one mainly because my wife didn’t like them!

Going forward and nearing retirement from the Prison Service I decided it was time to get one. I posted my desire to buy one on Facebook and was contacted by a chap who had the green one with just 1250 miles on the clock. I really wanted it but he was a bit uncertain about selling it so I carried on looking and found one in Edinburgh which was a nice hour or so train ride from where we are in Newcastle.

I went with my son and decided there and then I would have it, a deal was done and I drove it back without a hitch. I did a bit of research on the car and found it was originally a fleet management car with Rover and spent a lot of it’s life in Stevenage and Mansfield.

That was five years ago, and during my ownership it’s passed MOT’s with no advisories but has had the usual things go wrong such as the cylinder head gasket and the hard to find oil cooler!

I sourced some lattice type Metro Advantage alloys for it as the original wheels are the dreaded metric ones, these were then refurbished and new tyres also fitted, I also sourced an appropriate mobile phone for the car. It’s has also featured in the very last edition of Retro Cars, Classics Monthly and was also pictured in Classic Car Mart.

My next job is to have the suspension sorted with new parts as the car has dropped slightly.

Metros are great cars, just sadly not appreciated by many in the past, but would I sell it? Never!!
