A head turning American hot rod. The real origin of the whole custom car scene. It created a genre of classics without limits. This is one of finest creations we’ve seen for a good while. It is best described as automotive art. There is a lot to thank the custom car world for.

Background

  • Manufactured in 1930
  • Our vendor purchased this pick-up from a specialist Dealer in Northampton
  • He has owned it for about three years

He told us; he loves it and has loved owning it. He told us his passion has turned to horses and explained, “I want more horses”. The irony of that comment after driving a big-block V8 didn’t escape us.

Outside

It definitely has the ‘Wow’ factor in spades. Is there anything cooler than a hot rod pick up? Tell us if there is.

  • We understood the Model A had a “nut and bolt resto in Arizona
  • New steel wings were fitted
  • New running boards
  • The pickup box is new
  • As is the tailgate and bonnet
  • At the front is a headlight bar with King-Bees with integral indicators
  • The boxed original chassis has been powder coated in Carousel Red
  • Bodywork finished in Chevrolet Light Tan
  • The paint has been completed in clear over base

The polished wood flooring detailed with chrome rails on the pickup bed gives a hint at the attention to detail and expense lavished on this custom ride.

Mechanicals

With the side panels off, the best feature of this hot rod can be seen and heard. What a sight and sound.

  • Engine is completely rebuilt
  • It is 355 ci GM unit
  • With an Edelbrock 600 4-barrel carb
  • Electronic ignition
  • 350 GM floor change gearbox – Automatic
  • The diff is 9″ Ford with 325 posi-traction gears
  • Radial whitewalls sit on steel powder-coated rims
  • Side exit exhausts
  • Polished and painted rocker box covers
  • Polished headers
  • Chrome cased alternator

Inside

What a delight this is. Unpretentious, uncomplicated but effortlessly cool

  • Custom made Chocolate coloured upholstery
  • Custom bench seat and matching door cards in Chocolate
  • The colour coded dash houses a beautiful six dial gauge system
  • Classic, analogue looking white face with black dial gauges
  • All the gauges are VDO providing crystal clear read-outs day or night
  • Cherry wood steering wheel with polished spokes
  • Old school ivory gear knob
  • Good quality carpet

None of this push button start stuff; a simple authentic flick of the key springs the V8 into raucous life.

A very well thought through hot rod interior. Not gaudy, bling or brash. It is a marvellous compliment to the exterior design and colour scheme. And it’s just right.

Summary

A superbly presented pick up hot rod with a visible V8 and white wall tyres does a great job of selling itself on aesthetics alone.

Flick the key and the whole visual experience bursts into audible life and invades your senses. A roaring V8 and a flourish of exceptional touches make a jaw dropping classic.

Whether this is going to be your first hot rod or your umpteenth, this wonderful Ford is a great opportunity. Summer is coming! Good luck.
