Morgans have a wide appeal to classic car enthusiasts and Morgan devotees alike. When a rare Series 1, ‘flat rad’ model comes to the market there is always keen interest.

The Morgan 4/4 Series 1 made its debut at the Motor Show in 1936. The new Morgan featured an open two-seater body with luggage space behind the seats.

To the layman, all Morgans may appear the same. They’re not. The 4/4 is the world’s longest running production car. The name simply means ‘four wheels/four cylinder’ showing Morgan’s movement away from the bike-powered three-wheeler models of the 1930s.

This 1947 Morgan 4/4 Series 1 has been fully restored by our vendor. It was finished late 2022 and MOT’d after the restoration. Since then, the Morgan has driven less than 300 miles.

In common with many Morgan cars of that time, SXS 943 was originally supplied to a specialist body builder as a running chassis. In this case it was to Motourists Ltd, Great North Road, London. This was common after the second world war; the coach builders would build a customised body, which would account for the spare wheel being mounted in the same way as the early competition cars for the Le Mans and RAC Tourist Trophy races. SXS 943 was later exported to the USA but then brought back to the UK in 2018.

The original engine, a Standard Special, had been replaced by an early Standard Triumph engine also used on the MK1 Spitfire (large valve head, higher compression ratio and appropriate camshaft) but with a single Solex carburettor. This has been rebuilt with:

  • New bearing shells
  • Piston rings
  • Valves
  • Valve guides and springs
  • New clutch
  • Rebuilt gearbox

The vendor has completely dismantled and restored where necessary and the original chassis has been retained. All front and rear suspension components including axles, brakes and steering are all original as found on the car but have been carefully rebuilt.

Where necessary the wooden framework has been repaired or replaced and the chrome work has been restored. All the tyres are new.

There was no sign that a hood had ever been fitted to the Morgan, but a hood has been made with matching side screens. There is also a simple tonneau to cover the whole cockpit when necessary. During his ownership, the vendor has only ever driven the Morgan in fair weather, never in the wet.

You’ll see from the image gallery that the interior is just lovely, and has been thoughtfully restored:

  • Tan interior
  • Black carpets
  • Canadian Maple dashboard
  • Classic six dial clocks
  • Three spoke/three wire steering wheel with centre boss
  • Canadian Maple gear knob

Over 600 photographs of the restoration will be supplied on an SD card with the car. Within the image gallery we have included the condition of the SXS 943 when it was imported. We want to state the obvious amount of work that has been poured into this Morgan to get it to where it is today.

We have been to see this Morgan. Overall, it is in very good condition externally. We noticed some inconsistencies in the paintwork which we have imaged; they are in gallery so please do take a good look.

Our view

Quite understandably, Morgans have a wide and enduring appeal. That shows no signs of diminishing. When rare, early Series 1 flat rad models come to market, they are often quickly snapped up.

Vehicle Location: Easingwold, North Yorkshire YO61 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendors.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
