Whether you’re a long-time classic car owner or looking for your first classic, what is better than a Morris Minor. Full of charm, usability and easy to live with. It is one of the most popular cars ever created and there is no sign of that popularity diminishing.

This one is described by our vendor as “being in very good condition”.

Background

After some hurried changes to the pre-production prototype, the Minor made its debut in 1948.  It rightly established itself as a benchmark. It was known as the MM, or Lowlight because of its low positioned headlamps. The press and public were all madly enthusiastic about the Minor. The last Morris Minor drove off the production line 23 years later in 1971.

History

This is one of two Morris’s we have from the same vendor. They form part of a larger collection of classics that are coming to market.

These early Morris Minor Lowlights are now very scarce.

  • First registered 20 September 1950
  • Dispatch date 18 September
  • Supplied by Lock & Stagg Limited of Ipswich
  • Owned since 2018
  • Dry stored in a collection
  • At some point in its life this Morris has been in exhibited in a museum
  • In the Nineties it won a concours prize

The Morris has been dry stored in a collection since 2018 and little used. The collection is maintained by one mechanic who carries our regular day-to-day work on all the vehicles.

Inside

The interior keeps the elegant original simplicity imagined by the genius of Issigonis. The dashboard is a model of art deco design.

In the Office we all struggled to recall the last time we saw one in this kind of condition

  • Original wired spoked marble steering wheel
  • The dash is all original
  • The door cards, grab handles and chrome architecture is all in good condition
  • The tan coloured seats look first rate
  • The seats have chestnut brown piping
  • This matches the very good carpeting fitted throughout

Sitting each side of the white-faced speedo are oil and temperature gauges. Then there is that marvellous vertical slatted grille sitting bang in the middle.

Outside

It is often the originality that matters with classic cars. The protype Morris Minor was much narrower than the eventual production car. But everything after the war was a bit hurried. Early cars had a painted extension in the centre of the bumpers to cover the widening of the body of an extra four inches. If you look closely, you’ll see it.

  • Olive Green
  • Colour matched steel wheels
  • Chrome hubcaps
  • Colour matched bumpers with chrome fittings
  • Semaphore-type turn indicators
  • That distinctive low light front end
  • Split screen

The first impressions are of a carefully owned, well looked after early Morris Minor. Not unusual for a classic of this vintage; it was originally ‘Battleship Grey’ but that was later upgraded to the lovely period paintwork you see it wearing today

The exterior chrome fittings, boot & bonnet hinges, front and rear bumpers, and bonnet mascot are all in good condition as you can see, although the original chrome windscreen surround has aged – not unexpected in a car from this period. The original semaphore-type indicators are a terrific feature.

Mechanicals

  • Rare side valve engine
  • 918 cc
  • Torsion bar front suspension
  • Rack and pinion steering
  • Simple drum brakes all round

Jump in. Grab the lovely steering wheel. Pull the choke halfway. Not all the way. Flick the key to the right. Instantly the starter motor collides with the flywheel with that unmistakable high pitched metallic clang. The engine settles after a few moments and contentedly gets on with its job.

Every journey turns into an event.

Our view

There are many reasons why Morris Minors are probably one of the most popular classic cars. Charming, charismatic and fun. People will even give way at junctions.

When you stop, they are guaranteed to want a chat.

Morris Minors are much more than just old cars. They can become part of the family so be warned, they can gently work their way into your heart and household. They are practical and pragmatic. Easily be a daily driver. Easy to own. Easy to maintain with fantastic specialist and club support.

Low lights are the earliest and rarest of Morris Minors. We don’t need to tell you how sought after they are, especially ones like this.

Vehicle Location: Angus, Dundee DD2 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendors.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
