Size matters! There, we said it. When Crabbers first saw this ‘little’ beauty, she went mad for it, let’s be honest, we all did. Fortunately, for you guys, our House Rules prohibit any of us from bidding.

She’s small, she’s delightful, she’s reliable, no, not Crabbers, this adorable looking TE. Oh, and great value too.

So let’s understand a bit of the history of these lovely machines. The Ferguson TE20, designed by Harry Ferguson and by far his most successful design that marked a major advance in tractor design was distinguished by its lightweight, small size, manoeuvrability and versatility.

Manufactured from 1946 until 1956, and commonly known as the Little Grey Fergie. TE referred to Tractor England, overseas models were “TO” Tractor Overseas.. obvious when you think about it! The TE20 popularised Ferguson’s invention of the hydraulic three-point hitch system around the world, and the system quickly became an international standard for tractors of all makes and sizes that has remained to this day and played a large part in introducing widespread mechanised agriculture.

In many parts of the world this was the first tractor that was affordable to the average farmer and many remain in regular use in farming today. They have also become a popular collector’s item so we’re are as pleased as punch to offer this wonderfully presented 1953 Ferguson TE20 for auction.

The condition of this diesel engine Fergie with electric start is outstanding, running hours are unknown, however due to its condition and recent restoration, this 69-year-old will continue to go on and on and on..

Although she doesn’t come with any history file or V5C, bidders should be aware that she can be Historic Registered through the Massey Ferguson Tractor Club, and due to her age, she is road tax free and exempt from an MOT.

Purchased by our vendor from a local farmer who was still using it daily in the fields but has now recently retired hence why he was selling.  Our vendor drove the Fergie 10 miles back home with “no issues” proving the quality of build for her time as outstanding. She was then taken into the workshop and prepared for a well-deserved restoration.

The list of new parts fitted includes, take a deep breath..

  • Wheels, Tyres, Inner tubes, Rear wings and stays,
  • Modified larger capacity battery tray, Battery, Wiring loom
  • Horn, Headlights, Switches, Warning lights
  • Voltage regulator box, Starter solenoid
  • Water pump and water pump housing
  • Thermostat & gaskets
  • All fluids & Antifreeze, Radiator cap, Radiator hoses, Hose clips
  • PTO shaft and Three-part linkage top arm

Wow, and then she was topped off with a professional respray. So as you can probably tell, nothing has been missed out on this beautiful piece of agricultural history. Fitted extras also include a Horn, Headlights, an upgraded starting system and a lockable toolbox fitted to left side mudguard – ideal for your pasty while you’re working the fields or maybe just your mobile phone!

Engine and Transmission

As seen by the photos and video, this is a fully functional tractor. The engine is a Freeman Sanders design (in TE’s produced from 1951-1956) and is a responsive 2100cc Diesel 4 cylinder which provides 26 HP at 2000 RPM. With 2 WD, 4 forward and 1 reverse non synchro mesh gearbox, new tyres, fully operational 540 RPM PTO plus 3 point linkage upgraded to accept modern day farm machinery, jump in and she’s ready to go.

As you can see, the dash board is missing some gauges but has the relevant working switches for the front lights, horn and electric start.

Our View

A lovely little grey Fergie, extremely clean and well cared for. Following a recent restoration, rewire and professional respray plus a huge list of new parts fitted, this lovely example is perfect as a show piece or as a day to day working farm tractor.

We are told that everything works as it should, starts first time and drives superbly, so grab yourself a fabulous piece of British agricultural history today.
