A bridge to the future. For many, this Mercedes is the first modern Mercedes of the post-war era. The delightful ‘Ponton’ series combines classic looks and legendary build quality with surprisingly up-to-date modern driving characteristics. For that reason and many more, they make great classic cars.

History

  • Supplied by William Arnold, Motor Engineers & Body Builders of Manchester
  • First registered 4 March 1960
  • Just five former keepers
  • This Mercedes Ponton 190b has been with our vendor for 10 years
  • UK spec RHD car

Mercedes’ Ponton models signified a crucial episode in the history of the manufacturer. With the Ponton, Mercedes entered a new era of styling; the unibody profile, something which is still in place today.

The W120 was first introduced by Mercedes in 1953. It was sold as the Mercedes-Benz 180. Mercedes introduced the improved W121 in 1956 as the upmarket 190.

Interior

Later models are represented by a lower-case ‘b’ suffix. This signified a range of updates, including improved safety, padded dashboards and steering wheel pads.

  • Very tidy interior trim
  • Twin spare wheels
  • Original steering wheel
  • The original switches, knobs and dials all look very good

The luxurious interior of this Mercedes Ponton 190b is very clean and tidy. Good quality Mercedes materials are clear throughout. The red seat trim front and rear are all in good condition. All the door cards and chrome door furniture are in place. The carpets are neat and tidy. The headlining is in good condition. The period dash looks fresh and clean.

It’s often joked that Mercedes massively over-engineered their cars back then. Take a look in the boot and you’ll see a perfect example in the form of not one but two spare wheels.

Outside

The 190 models can be distinguished by the additional chrome trim along the bottom edge of the windows, the three flutes either side of the main grille and other detailed trim upgrades, especially inside.

Overall, the Maroon paintwork is fine. Get up very close and you’ll spot a few defects. Our vendor is a professional panel beater, he has highlighted the areas in question. They are generally typical of a car built in 1960 that has survived this number of British Summers.

The chrome is all good. The original features such as those charming wing mounted indicators, original Mercedes hub caps and the colour coded wheels have all survived too.

Our vendor advises there has been ‘no welding underneath’.

Mechanicals

  • Independent suspension all round
  • Later models like this one came with the improved low-pivot design to reduce camber changes in cornering
  • Single joint rear axle
  • 1.9-litre four-cylinder M121 engine
  • Chain driven single overhead camshaft
  • Brakes professionally rebuilt

The engine bay looks clean and dry. There are a couple of images in the Gallery plus we have a short video of the engine running. Our vendor has also advised that the Ponton will come with a fresh MOT so that gives some extra confidence.

Summary

For a car reaching a pensionable age years ago, the Mercedes Ponton drives with incredible modernity. That is due to one thing; build quality.

The Mercedes Ponton was built as well as anything with the three-pointed star adorning the grille. The pride with which they were assembled is reflected in every last nut and bolt and that can be appreciated even to this day.

Thanks to that impressive engine and advanced suspension set-up, it’s also a great car to drive. It has comfortable seats and plenty of space inside – meaning friends and family can join in the fun of classic car ownership.

Everyone can see the rise of Mercedes values over the last five years. The Mercedes Ponton models represent a fascinating period in  the manufacturer’s history. We expect these to follow suit.

Good luck! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
