Description

  • Service History
  • Option list
  • In Teal Blue with Dove Grey leather interior

The Mercedes SL500 (R230). Pace. Panache. Performance. And timeless styling. From any angle, it’s a great looking car. Not too cluttered nor lacking eye-catching detail. It has the classic SL prompts going back to the ’50s but integrated with more tech than the Starship Enterprise.

History and paperwork

  • Under 50k miles
  • Packed service history
  • Serviced at 46,924 miles
  • All the handbooks and two keys
  • New front discs and pads

Outside

  • Rare Teal Blue Paintwork
  • AMG Wheels
  • Good overall condition
  • Michelin Pilot Sport tyres
  • Vario roof
  • Optional Key-less entry

With show-stopping good looks, the Mercedes SL500 looks like it has been artfully crafted from one solid block of steel.

All the AMG wheels are good, except for one which has a small amount of deterioration around the centre cap. Our Gallery shows what looks like some careless supermarket door opening dings on the offside front wing. The marks are very minor, and they’ve been touched in. Other than that, the exterior looks fine.

The magical vario aluminium roof works as it should. In just 16 seconds, to be precise. What a piece of tech that is. And the Mercedes SL500 pulls off that rare trick of looking good with the roof up, or down.

Mechanicals

  • 5.0 litre V8 engine
  • Auto transmission
  • 0-60 in 6.1 seconds
  • Capable of 155mph, allegedly
  • New ABC pump

This Mercedes SL500 has, amongst other things, the optional Active Body Control (ABC) suspension fitted. The electronically controlled hydraulics ensure the suspension maintains a level body under differing circumstances. In fact, it is even better than that. The sensors and microcomputers enable the system to correct undesirable body movements before they develop. The result is a supremely fluent and stable car, especially when moving at pace, which the V8 can, especially through corners.

This experience is heightened by a noticeably more responsive accelerator than is usual for a Mercedes, along with crisp steering. It makes for a very sporty package, if you want, or for effortless grand touring.

The ABC pump and hydraulic fluid were replaced at 41,000 miles. And a busy service book supports the good condition.

Inside

  • Dove grey perforated leather upholstery
  • Multifunction electronically adjustable heated memory seats
  • Fully functional Mercedes-Benz COMAND infotainment with nav
  • Dual zone climate control
  • PARKTRONIC park assist
  • DISTRONIC cruise control
  • Factory option wind deflector
  • Optional wood trimmed steering wheel and centre console
  • 5 CD auto changer which is fully functional plus an analogue TV

This Mercedes SL500 looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside. It appears to be in very good condition throughout. All dials and instruments work as they should.

Importantly, our vendor tells us, “The rear window seals don’t leak and there is no rust in the boot whatsoever as shown in the photos”.

The Mercedes comes with a “rather cool” car phone and genuine Mercedes First Aid Kit, unopened.

Summary

The Mercedes SL500 is a great package. They were c.£70k as a base price when new. The options list bumped them up to just shy of £100k. We see a lot come to market. Many of them with high mileage and very little history. This one is the opposite. Low mileage and a well-used service book.

These are a great car and supremely practical. The German build quality shines through. They can be used daily or as a weekend car. Either way they are great value at the moment. We predict that is about to change. Find one that has been looked after. Low mileage. And in good condition.

Oh, wait. You just have. Good luck!

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
