Probably the most iconic series of pick-up trucks, the Ford’s F-Series. Instantly recognisable, it has become synonymous with the marque’s success. This F250 is the much sought after fifth generation. While not as common as they once were, they still pop up periodically and come in all types of condition, from boneyard junk to show winners.

This one stands out for a number of reasons. It is a very well sorted Ford F250 pick-up that a previous owner has sunk a huge amount of money into. Additionally, it is the now very rare F250 Camper Special. Try and find another one of these like this.

Background

The F250 Camper Special package was an option for the F-series from ‘65 – ‘82.

With the rising affluence of Americans during the sixties, Ford decided to offer upgrade options for their F-series trucks. Americans were keen to explore the open road, so the popularity of campers that could slide onto the beds of their everyday trucks was huge. Families could now take their home with them without having to pay for a motel or tow a large RV.

The Camper Special package came with upgraded rear suspension, heavy duty cooling system, beefed-up wiring harness and a larger alternator, all as standard.

  • Year of manufacture 1966
  • First registered in the UK 1 August 2018
  • Three UK owners
  • Full set of restoration photos on a memory stick which will come with the rest of the records for the F250

Our vendor purchased this F250 in August 2021, and it has hardly left his garage. His lifestyle has changed recently and now a lot of time is spent in France in his new home, with his recently married wife.

Mechanicals

It is all about that lovely V8, isn’t it?

  • 352 cubic inch FE V8 (that is 5768cc in English money)
  • Four speed floor shifter box
  • Front beam axle with independent coil springs
  • Rear leaf springs
  • Two-wheel drive

The 352 FE V8 (FE-Ford Engine) was produced from 1958 to 1976 and yes, it’s a very good engine. It was good enough to be as used in the AC Cobra by Carroll Shelby and the Le Mans dominating Ford GT40. In later years, the basic 352 was bored and stroked to produce the legendary 427 engine.

In standard form, it is good for around 210bhp. You’ll note from the images of the condition of the engine and that it has some Edelbrock upgrades. All our vendor knows is that “it drives wonderfully and sounds fantastic”.

It appears a new exhaust system has been fitted during the full restoration. The running gear, rear axle, suspension etc, all look clean, tidy and in good order. The underside appears to have been treated to corrosion protection after the overhaul.

Inside

Even the marvellous V8 cannot overshadow the interior.

  • Carefully colour co-ordinated to the exterior coachwork
  • Full width bench seat
  • Colour matched seat belts
  • The full headlining is in very good condition
  • Polished wood rimmed steering wheel
  • Large centre-piece speedo in great condition, flanked by oil and alternator gauges

The whole cabin space is beautifully finished. If you spend some time looking at the images, you’ll note the attention to detail. Items such as the colour matched sun visors, the crosshead screws on the doors and the gorgeous, polished wood on the tip of the indicator stalk. Someone has gone to a lot of trouble in this interior. It is one of the best we’ve seen.

Outside

Outside, the Red over White colour combination suits the Ford superbly. The original bold design of single cab and long bed never goes out of fashion. Modern manufacturers from Japan and elsewhere have emulated the design format. But they’ve never really pulled it off as well, have they?

The images tell their own story, we’ll selfishly pick a few of our favourite features.

  • The intricate front grille
  • The clean rear end with vertical mounted tail lamps and embossed Ford emblem
  • The painted rear bumper with chrome front bumper works very well
  • Those delightful finned black and chrome hubcaps
  • The premium low profile Tyger tonneau covers are some of the best on the market and add a nice practical modern touch

Each area, the mechanicals, the interior and the body style individually stand-out in their own right. Brought together they are a compelling package.

Our view

A Ford F250 pick-up Camper Special is one of the rare finds classic collectors search for. In this condition? Well, we struggle to recall the last time we saw a standard F250 in this condition.

A previous owner has spent huge amounts of time and money getting this right. It is easily capable of picking up a trophy or two. Equally, what a sublime pleasure it would be to just pop to the pub with some pals.

These are popular for a reason. And the prices of rare ones in this kind or condition are only going in one direction. Hands up who wants it?

Vehicle Location: Netley Abbey, Southampton SO31 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendors.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
