The Ford Mustang Mach 1 was more than just a car. It was a symbol of freedom, power, and enjoyment. From the moment the Mustang roared into life, this legendary muscle car captured the hearts and imaginations of car enthusiasts everywhere.

Outside and underside

This 1972 Ford Mustang SportsRoof has an extended, low profile. The fast-back sloping roofline gives it a sleek, aerodynamic look. The front end of the car is dominated by a wide honey combe grille, bordered by headlights. The flanks of the Mustang had sweeping lines that emphasised its length and speed. This one is equipped with the optional ‘trunk-lid’ spoiler. That is boot to you and me. It also sports the stylish front ‘chin’ spoiler (or splitter) as fitted to the Mach 1 model.

The Raven Black Gloss paintwork accentuates every inch of the Mustang.

Underneath this Mustang is remarkably clean. Take a look at the numerous images in the Gallery. We are struggling to remember seeing one as clean and tidy as this.

Inside

The Mustang is drop dead cool on the inside too. Chrome and black. It is as simple as that. In its era it was gorgeous . Nothing much has changed really.

Mechanicals

Then there is wonderful Mustang V8 engine. The engine is a 302 (4.9-litre) cubic inch V8. It is known as the Windsor 302 by enthusiasts which is a reference to manufacturing origins. In 1970, the manufacturing was moved from Windsor, Ontario to Cleveland.  Along with the move came most of the upgrades that stayed with it for the remainder of its production life and make the 302 such a joy. The 302 engine was a true muscle car unit, producing 210bhp and a huge 310 lb-ft of torque.

This one has;

  • Three speed auto transmission
  • Factory original single exhaust
  • High Performance Taylor leads
  • New suspension bushes
  • Dual servo unit

More info.

Our vendors know their cars. Paul told us this;

1972 Ford Mustang SportsRoof with auto trans, a rare single exhaust system which sounds great and different to a twin system. It has the 302 Windsor engine. I’ve no reason to dispute the 72,000 miles on the clock. It is a matching numbers car. Recently  it has had fitted a new dual servo, new transmission modulator valve, front suspension bushes, solid state coil, and  magnetic non return fuel filter.

From the collector the exhaust is stainless steel. Chrome rocker covers and air filter. A virtually new Lucas battery. The wheels are American Torque Thrust wheels. The tyres are excellent with a full size spare. The interior has no rips or tears. The radio and heater both work.

The paintwork is good. It has a few slight marks and some micro blisters, however it polishes up very well as you can see from the walk round video. Chrome is also in excellent condition

We have also been advised that the ignition lights are not working but our vendor believes it may be a fuse and also the passenger door does not unlock from the outside.

Summary

It is not essential to be ‘in to’ American muscle cars. As classic car enthusiasts there are some cars that at some point every enthusiast should own. The Mustang is one of them

Fast, powerful, stylish, and uber cool and it delivered on all counts. The Mustang is an iconic symbol of motoring. The style. The emotion. The sound. Oh, the sound. Go on. You know you want to.
