Issigonis’ humble invention far outgrew everyone’s expectations. It is now a true British icon. Everyone you speak to has a story about or connection to these fantastic cars. The Mini won the hearts and minds of a nation.

The Mini’s history needs no re-telling. But it can sometimes be re-modelled – as our vendor has done with his stunning take on Mk 1 Cooper S spec Mini

Comprehensively refurbished and beautifully finished. The original characterful touches are still there enhanced by choice upgrades. The whole package is compelling.

Background

  • First registered 1 November 1967
  • Only three former owners
  • An original Mk1 Mini
  • Owned since 2006 and maintained on a regular basis by an enthusiast keeper

We’re told;

“This Mini comes with tons of info in the history file which is literally hours of reading. Restoration occurred between 1998 – 2000. Strong and detailed documentation exists to evidence nut and bolt rebuild as far as was possible to Cooper S spec. This includes stage by stage photos and an extensive history of receipts”

Mechanicals

  • 1293cc engine
  • Twin one-and three-quarter SU carburettors
  • Cooper S front brakes
  • Cooper S master cylinder – see below
  • Five speed gearbox
  • Twin petrol tanks both are operational
  • Dry suspension
  • Yokohama tyres fitted to genuine Dunlop alloy wheels – a spare Dunlop alloy wheel is also present
  • Gear lever extension fitted

The super tidy engine bay speaks volumes about this Mini.

As we all know the A-series engine is bomb proof. Boring to just plus 20 thousand increases the swept volume to 1293cc. This engine is widely accepted to be one of the best enhancements to the A-Series. These engines are as fast and as powerful as you can get, whilst keeping the original road driveability and reliability.

What we often see when uprated engines are fitted is that the drivetrain is overlooked and ill equipped to cope with the extra power, rendering the engine next to useless. Our vendor has fitted an upgraded five speed box which means all that useable traction is transferred to the driving fun.

Our vendor tells us:

The engine has been meticulously rebuilt and again there is an extensive collection of receipts running into thousands of pounds. At the time of selling the car I am unaware of any known faults – the performance is a force to be reckoned with – a wolf in lambs clothing, the engine sounds awesome on acceleration with the twin 1:75 SU carbs. The gearbox is a 5-speed special.

I have a new master cylinder for the brakes and the S type servo that needs to be fitted as an upgrade as a non-standard master cylinder is currently fitted arising from a failure of a previous master cylinder, the opportunity to fit it has eluded me!”

Outside

  • Almond Green/Old English White roof
  • Quad headlamps – genuine Cibie Oscars
  • Racing decals on the doors – these will peel off
  • Leather bonnet strap
  • Bullet wing mirrors
  • Extra offside wing mirror
  • Dunlop wheels
  • Decal front number plate
  • Single reverse lamp
  • Wheel arch extensions

We understand there is a photographic record of the work carried out

Inside

The interior has the best of both worlds. With the equipment it has fitted it can easily be used and enjoyed at events. However, in no time at all it can be returned to ‘standard’ road spec and be used as an everyday car – although there is nothing ordinary about this Mini.

  • Front bucket seats
  • The standard seats will come with it
  • The rear seats are standard
  • Genuine 1960s roll over bar – made by John Aley
  • The vendor says this is bolted in, not welded
  • Rally spec dash

Additional information

Our vendor supplied this additional helpful info.

“Bodywork fully wax oiled. Front wings have plastic internal protective shields.

Period bucket seats are currently fitted – internal panel work was refurbished, and the original seats that have also been refurbished will come with the car if required.

New centre binnacle, clocks and 120 mph speedo showing 13,800 miles since rebuild – never used in the rain.

Bumpers, over riders and window trims are stainless steel.

Works style dashboard fitted with array of period clocks, stop watches, map reading lights etc. (some are for show only but all essentials work correctly) (the dashboard can easily be removed if required to return to a standard appearance.

Period John Aley rear roll cage fitted (this can be removed if required as it is bolted and not welded).

4 X Cibie lights are fitted and are operational.

White rally style door boxes are fitted – these are magnetic and can easily be detached.

There are other accessories fitted that are obvious when viewing the pictures.

The bodywork overall is very good/excellent. There are some blemishes on the paintwork on the front offside wing *** of note *** these have been in situ since I first took possession of the car and have never worsened. The underneath is well protected from corrosion.”

Summary

This Mk1 Mini has re-modelled and, in a way, reinvented the history of the Mini Cooper. The five-speed gearbox and 1293cc engine are notable updates. But this Mini has also had a “ground up rebuild”.

For many of us Coopers are out of reach. This updated and re-modelled Mini means an updated and rebuilt car with all the original characteristics but with few of the anxieties of a 1967 car is now within reach. You’d be stark raving mad to miss this opportunity. Good luck.
