The Ford Cortina 1600E achieved the perfect balance of tradition, style and pace.

By the mid-Sixties, Ford UK had one aim – to be the best-selling cars in the UK. In the autumn of ’67 Ford launched its Executive class sports saloon, the 1600E for £982.

History

The 1600E had the chassis strengthening and the lowered suspension from the Dagenham-built Lotus Cortina Mk2, along with the Cortina GT’s ‘Kent’ engine. It was packed with additional equipment too.

  • First registered 10 February 1970
  • Our vendor purchased it around two years ago
  • We understand the Cortina resided in Durham
  • Then went to Southern Ireland for a long time
  • It came back to the UK a couple of years ago
  • It was originally Gold

Mechanicals

The 1.6 litre Kent engine always felt eager and crisp. With a sharp gearchange and road holding that belies the Cortina’s humble underpinnings, the 1600E was testament to just how right a mass-produced car can be when all the simple things are done correctly.

  • 1599cc, inline four-cylinder Kent crossflow
  • Twin-choke Weber 32 DFM carburettor
  • 92bhp / 97lb ft of torque
  • Four-speed manual, rear-wheel drive
  • Independent MacPherson struts and coil springs with anti-roll bar at the front
  • Live de Dion axle suspended via semi-elliptic leaf springs and trailing radius arms with telescopic hydraulic dampers at the rear
  • Front disc brakes, rear drums

Outside

Added to that genuine performance element of the Cortina were the slim pillars and brilliantly proportioned lines, making the Cortina Executive one of the smartest cars of its day.

  • Silver
  • Matt-black grille
  • Rostyle wheels
  • Wipac 562 auxiliary lamps

The exclusive feature on the E model give this Cortina 1600E a unique look. Two of our favourites are on the rear quarters; those oblong air vents underneath those discrete little E badges. Very nice

Inside

  • Black reclining bucket seats
  • Matching ribbed door cards in very good condition
  • Walnut trimmed dashboard and door caps
  • Those classic inset Smiths gauges
  • Black carpet
  • The 2nd generation 1600E, like this one, came with sculptured rear seats
  • New headlining
  • Map pockets in foot wells

Summary

Once ubiquitous, there are very few Cortina 1600Es around today. They come in all sorts of condition. Unlike most Fast Fords, the 1600Es have remained affordable. This one is reserved extremely sensibly. If this was your era, do not miss this opportunity.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that and, in a sector, where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’ on a vehicle.

Let’s be honest, everyone knows the broad value of a classic and the ‘market’ decides – the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, if you’d like us to provide an estimate that’s fine, just email us and we’ll get back to you.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect, and your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics. So, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, assume that the vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in their life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology continues to improve, but please understand that image and sound quality varies. If you would like more images, please ask us and we will contact our vendor for you.

Finally, please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired via an auction site. If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.
