The 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe is a rare offering that has the impressive size and formal style of the Continental Sedan, however delivered in a two-door package. Taking the classic hidden headlights and angular lines of the Continental Sedan but applying them to a more intimate luxury vehicle.

Widely regarded as Lincoln’s answer to the Cadillac Coupe DeVille, the Lincoln Continental Town Coupe was built at a somewhat restricted pace which serves to make them increasingly attractive to collectors world-wide.

The Lincoln Continental was always a highly desirable luxury automobile and the Town Coupe option truly escalated luxury to an even greater level of distinction.

Outside

At a whopping 19.5 feet long and 7 foot wide, this Lincoln Continental Town Coupe is a truly impressive automobile.

Prestigious, regal, elegant… We could go on and on about the distinguished exterior styling – the Rolls Royce inspired front grille, the lengthy knife-blade fenders, imposing square jaw-line, chrome wraparound bumpers, hidden headlights and twin vertical taillights.

Finished in a beautiful, deep, rich, Burgundy (complemented wonderfully by the sumptuous Burgundy leather upholstery, we’ll get to that shortly) this Town Coupe also features a colour coordinated vinyl roof as was standard.

Our vendor informs us that both the paintwork and chrome are in good order and that the car is as clean and rust free underneath as it is on top.

The rear quarter windows carry the Continental star logo, one of the many little elegant touches that this Town Coupe features.

Inside

Where do we start? As you would imagine, upon opening the door and taking a peek inside, you are instantly transported back in time. The interior of the Lincoln Town Coupe is an example of opulence and luxury that could only come straight from the 1970s.

The exclusive button-tufted soft burgundy leather pillow-style lounge seats are extremely wide and deep-seated for comfort.

The front seats are 50/50 twin comfort lounge seats with individual six-way power and a separate folding centre arm rest, offering additional comfort for both the front seat passenger and the driver.

The fabulously roomy rear bench seat has three lap belts and comfortably accommodates three passengers. This too features a folding centre armrest.

The deep pile burgundy carpets are in good order and only enhance the overall luxurious, time warp atmosphere. The padded door cards, complete with both chrome and wood effect trim appear to be in great shape, as does the burgundy headlining. All in all, for a car that is almost 45 years old, the opulent interior of this particular Lincoln Town Coupe remains in remarkable condition.

The magnificent dash is truly a 1970s masterpiece, complete with Cartier clock – although our vendor has updated the original radio, with new internals offering DAB Bluetooth hands free, USB and AM/FM radio. Other specifications include climate control air conditioning, electric seats, power windows – including electric quarter lights, cruise control and electric aerial – all of which, our vendor confirms, work as they should.

Engine & Mechanicals

Lift the enormous hood of the Lincoln Continental Town Coupe and underneath, you’ll discover the 6.6 litre, 400 cubic inch Cleveland V8 – big brother to the legendary 351 Cleveland, that provides 315lbft of torque for effortless cruising.

This is mated to the Ford C6 Select-Shift 3-speed automatic transmission. The car has now covered just 47,000 miles and our vendor tells us, runs and drives faultlessly, just as you would expect with such low mileage and an exceptional level of maintenance. The steering is fingertip light, the transmission changes are virtually imperceptible and the surprisingly powerful brakes pull the car up straight and true.

Lincoln worked hard to make the Continental Town Coupe a terrific cruiser when new, and that still remains obvious. It all comes down to the three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, and front discs.

This Lincoln Continental Town Coupe still sports the original forged aluminium alloy wheels, which carry the iconic Continental star.  New whitewall tyres were fitted all round in July 2020.

Also included is a huge history file for the Lincoln. This includes not only the original US purchase paperwork and handbooks but also piles of invoices, customs paperwork and old MOT certificates.

Our View

This Lincoln Continental Town Coupe is a fantastic low mileage example, that really is in remarkable condition – both inside and out. Absolutely guaranteed to turn heads wherever it goes, this car will provide immense enjoyment, luxury, opulence and unbelievable comfort for whoever is lucky enough to own it next. Good luck bidding!

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
