Description

Time for something a little bit different. For those who enjoy the unusual, rare, or long-lost classics of the 1980s, you’ll love this.

With a very small Dealer network, Honda’s Accord Coupe was never a huge seller in the UK. But it had a very loyal following. Those who know, understand what a fabulous car this is, and it’s very, very cool. This one is a scarce survivor.

Background

The first-generation Accord appeared in late 1976. Reviewers noted its precise steering, sharp handling, impressive fuel economy, and comfortable interior. It was full of neat Japanese innovations such as lights-out and door not-closed warnings. One review said, “It is certainly the best automotive buy we’ve seen in a long time.”

The second-gen Accord came out in 1982. It grew a little on the outside and a lot on the inside. The second-gen car was sportier, more refined, and more efficient. In November of 1982, Honda began building Accords Stateside in Marysville, Ohio, which is where Accord production continues to this day.

  • First registered 9 September 1983
  • 12 months MOT – Very clean MOT history
  • Described to be in “cracking condition
  • Our vendor states it could easily pass for a museum piece
  • Large folder full of old invoices/receipts
  • Original bill of sale from 1983.
  • First owner kept the car until 2017 when he passed away.
  • Only four former keepers

Inside

  • Blaupunkt radio
  • Pioneer speakers
  • Light grey carpet in good condition with black over-mats
  • Light grey velour upholstery with charcoal piping
  • The headlining is in good condition
  • The black period vinyl trim is in good condition
  • The door cards, arm rests, grab trims and chrome are quite remarkable
  • Huge courtesy light in the roof that looks like it should be on top of lighthouse

Small items such as the factory rubber heel-insert on the driver’s side carpet tell the real condition of this Honda.

Outside

  • Metallic silver
  • Black trim
  • Steel wheels
  • Original Honda centre caps
  • Small scratches on bumper corners
  • The front and rear lamps, along with the period amber indicators, show little sign of ageing
  • Check out the image behind the fuel filler cap. There is no hiding in there

The three-door shape is timeless and practical. The large doors mean easy access for front and rear seat passengers and the tailgate opens to reveal a very practical boot area.

Mechanicals

One of the features that set ‘80s Japanese cars apart was of course their reliability and frugal fuel consumption.

This Accord has the 1.6 litre (1602cc) EL 1 power unit.

  • A four-cylinder SOHC eight-valve engine
  • Twin choke carburettor
  • 80bhp
  • Electric fuel pump

It was mated to a super-smooth, super reliable three speed automatic gearbox that Honda branded the ‘Hondamatic’.

Honda were prevented from producing a traditional planetary gearset automatic transmission due to patents. In the early days, Honda asked Borg-Warner to design a prototype transmission for their upcoming vehicles however Borg-Warner declined. Honda struck out on its own and their autos were the envy of everyone. Now, looking at the success of Honda, Borg-Warner are probably kicking themselves.

Our view

What a smashing classic this will make. Useable. Fun. Frugal. And different. The ‘80s Japanese classic prices are rising steadily and are where the clever money is at the moment. We wouldn’t buy it for that reason. We’d buy it because it is bloomin’ lovely. It is a pleasure to market it for our vendor.

Vehicle Location: Wakefield, West Yorkshire WF3 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendors.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
