Description

  • 1.8 SGL Automatic
  • Five door
  • Metallic Red
  • Remarkably well preserved
  • The last surviving 1.8 SGL Auto on the road

Take a look at photographs of 1980s traffic. Japanese cars, Nissans in particular, were everywhere. Where have they all gone? Today, only a handful of Stanza’s remain.

This one is a legend all of its own. Not just because it is a superb ultra-rare survivor. Go on to the Nissan Stanza Wiki page. This is the Stanza that is pictured.

The Nissan Stanza model has some historically important context. Nissan signified modernity with a number of other major modifications to its outdated models. Not least of these changes was to ditch the Datsun name.

Launched in 1982, the Stanza replaced the old 60’s designed Datsun 510. The Stanza was a thoroughly modern car which continued in various guises into the late 80’s cementing Nissan’s reputation for build quality, reliability and all-round great value.

History

  • First registered 27 September 1984
  • MOT’d every year since 2005 (except 2008)
  • New MOT to January 2024
  • Since 2005 this Stanza has travelled on average 1,100 miles a year
  • Looking at How Many left, this Stanza appears to be the last 1.8 SGL Auto on the road today.. a rare beast indeed

Outside

  • Five door Hatchback
  • 8 SGL model
  • Metallic Red Paint
  • Electric Sunroof
  • Period Alloy wheels

With a couple of exceptions, which we’ll forgive it, this Stanza is in remarkable condition, given its age. Yes, there are some odd rust blisters which can be expected from a 39 year old car! The exception to highlight is an area of lacquer peel on the nearside front wing.

If we were being picky we might also highlight the weathering to the front and rear bumpers and bumper trim. But let’s have a reality check. This is a very rare survivor. In context, our opinion is that this Stanza has aged wonderfully well.

The electric sunroof works. The brightwork, glass and trim are all generally in good condition. The alloy wheels have survived and were professionally restored last year.

Take a scroll through our Image Gallery and see for yourself.

Inside

  • Top of the range SGL trim
  • Velour seats
  • Original period features

The interior is striking. How on earth has this Stanza retained this extraordinary state?!

The dash fascia and clocks are all clear and legible. All the seats are as near as they can get to being pristine. The dual combination door cards have all retained their originality. The dashboard and switch gear are in all in good condition. One stalk is faded, but you’ll see that in the Gallery. The Stanza has the original cassette player and separate Nissan radio in place.

As if that wasn’t enough, in the rear window is the original selling dealer sticker and the Nissan foot mats are there too!

The vendor has helpfully removed the spare wheel to photograph that area to demonstrate how clean this car is. This Nissan Stanza certainly appears to have had careful ownership.

Mechanicals

Nissan knew they had to up their game. They smashed-it with the Stanza.

  • 8 four cylinder engine
  • 90bhp
  • Three speed automatic gearbox

The suspension was independent all-round with MacPherson struts and coil springs front and rear. Lower track control arms were used at the front with modern trailing arms at the rear. The antiquated recirculating ball steering was replaced with a power rack-and-pinion set-up. For the first time there was a choice of three-speed automatic. The optional auto was a rare model. This says even more about this Stanza.

Here’s some info about the car from our vendor Neil:

Wind down windows and electric sunroof which works.   Next year it becomes historic so MOT & TAX exempt in 2024. The car passed it’s MOT this month.

The period existing wheels were professionally restored last year. It also has it’s spare wheel. Note the original cassette stereo and separate Nissan radio. Nissan foot mats remain.

The head gasket was replaced with a professional head skim last year, plus new water pump and of course the cam belt.”

Our view

With annual events such as the Festival of the Unexceptional, everyday, useable classics like the Nissan Stanza are becoming very sought after.

Moreover, we’ve seen a very clear upward only trend in the last two years – 80’s and 90’s Japanese cars. Without doubt these marques are outperforming the market.

To find a Nissan Stanza like this is quite an achievement and we are delighted to be marketing this car. For a number of reasons we have a strong sense there will be a lot of interest in this Stanza, not least because of the low reserve. Good luck.

Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: Warwick CV34 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
