Description

The 635CSi is easily one of the best-looking BMWs. In 1986, this BMW set the benchmark for luxury GT performance cars. Today they are probably one of the best choices if you’re looking for a classic coupe.

History and background

With its long, tapered bonnet, crisply defined edges and slightly menacing image, Paul Bracq’s design was soon christened the ‘Sharknose’, and it stuck.

The new 6 Series coupe was introduced to the press in March 1976. It went through minor updates until in 1982 when BMW gave it a full facelift. Changes included updates to the exterior styling, engine, chassis, suspension, electronics and the interior.

Our vendor told us:

“The BMW had a £10,000 recommissioning at the BMW specialist ‘Classic Bahnstormers’ in Cirencester only 2 years ago (see invoice images in the gallery).

Tyres all good, new ones supplied & fitted a few years ago costing around £450 p/corner (Michelin) They have covered minimal miles since fitting

It has had only 2 previous owners. The first owner from 1987-1990 who covered most of the miles. Records show it had a private plate of 723 DPin this person’s ownership.

My father purchased the car from him and tucked it away in their Farm workshop. The BMW was subsequently transferred into my name in 2010. It has been in the family now for 35 years and only covered around 2,500 miles in that time

Sadly, no history, paperwork from the previous owner & not a great deal from the last 35 years as the car has simply sat doing nothing. We do have all the paperwork from the big works carried out a couple of years ago. The coupe runs & drives nicely. No warning lights appear on the dash, only a brake test light but once you put your foot on the pedal this disappears

MOT history shows the odometer was stuck for a while but has since been fixed. The 635CSi has an odometer showing 36,250 miles. The speedo stopped working for a little while from 2009 – 2018. However, we think the BMW covered less than 500 miles in that time”

Mechanicals

The major facelift in 1982 resulted in probably the most sought-after version.

  • The facelift included the 3.5 litre straight six M30B34 engine
  • Producing 182 bhp
  • Fitted with Bosch Motronic digital fuel injection
  • Driven by a four speed ZF automatic gearbox

The updated Macpherson struts in the new front suspension were double linked, making the car less likely to dip under hard braking.

The new rear axle came equipped with a new pitman arm to control camber changes.

The ventilated rear discs were replaced with solid ones.

Inside

Build and quality control was a real high point for BMW when they produced the 635CSi.

Overall, the 635CSi has a wonderfully designed interior:

  • Pacific Blue upholstery
  • Recaro sports seats
  • The carpets are outstandingly clean and tidy
  • The dash and centre console are very well preserved.
  • The driver seat is showing its age in a few places, although it does look like age/wear rather than damage
  • The door trims are in good condition
  • Electric windows
  • Original tool kit in the boot lid

The interior is authentic and delivers and real 1980s experience too.

Outside

The two-door coupe design is something special. An important part of the facelift was that the rust protection was improved considerably.

  • The iconic BMW kidney grilles
  • Flanked by quad headlamps
  • These are seeming supported by that premium chrome front bumper
  • Below the front bumper is the low air dam inset with driving lamps
  • The front view with the bonnet overhang is a brilliant design
  • TRX alloy wheels with Michelin TRX tyres
  • Black double coachlines
  • Lower body mouldings
  • The rear quarters swoop down, integrating the rear panel and bumper
  • Matt black centre panel with large rear lamps either side
  • Above that is the boot mounted spoiler
  • Below is the twin exhaust pipe exiting dead centre

You’ll see from the numerous images; the BMW does of course have the usual ageing associated with a classic car of this period. The Germans are probably unique in being able to design gorgeous four-seater two-door coupes. The 635CSi must be the 80s pinnacle of that process.

Our view

Thanks to a combination of style, build quality and performance, the CSi was a very sought after car in the 80/90s. Fast forward more than 30 years and that balance is still a big draw.

Low ownership, low mileage, good condition and big fat invoice of £10,000 of someone else’s money makes this BMW very attractive.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.
