It is 55 years since the Mercedes S-Class was launched. It is now a bona fide classic and impressive enough to trounce many moderns.

The Mercedes S-Class represented the pinnacle of automotive prowess, this is the flagship of the Mercedes range. It is the model that gets the cutting-edge tech first, offers the greatest refinement and always features ample performance. The S-Class often features technology that wouldn’t feature in mainstream cars for years or even decades.

The Mercedes W126 S-Class was produced in two series. The first being cars until 1985, and the Series 2 models from 1985 to 1991. The second-generation S-Class is considered by many to be the best W126

History

This Mercedes 420 SEL spent around eight years standing in a private collection. The current owner purchased from there as it was. Subsequently, in February 2017 he recommissioned the Mercedes and carried out any work needed, including MOT work and then put it into storage for a short time… But the world changed when the pandemic engulfed us all and that is where the Mercedes still is today.

Our vendor Graham tells us:

Outside

  • The body work has survived well
  • At some point it has had exterior paint work to a high standard
  • The lower sections of the car were colour matched into white, as were the bumper lowers and mirror backs
  • There are now a couple of small areas where corrosion is evident under the paint
  • These will need to be attended to sooner, rather than later if you want to keep the car looking this nice
  • The bumper chromes are good, as is all the bright work around the car

Inside

  • The interior of this Mercedes 420 SEL is excellent
  • In rare blue cloth which contrasts nicely against the white exterior
  • The interior space inside the SEL is noticeably greater than the standard wheelbase cars
  • The electrics all work – except the driver’s window which has stopped functioning
  • The radio has been disconnected as it was draining the battery

Mechanicals

  • This Mercedes 420 SEL is mechanically sound
  • The engine previously had a habit of dying under load, this was traced to various blockages in the fuel system and was rectified before the 420 SEL went into storage
  • The engine is smooth and powerful
  • Starts easily first time
  • Gearbox is excellent
  • The remainder of the general mechanics are good

There is a plastic wallet with the car containing old MOTs back to 1993, lots of old receipts and the original owner’s manual.

Summary

For decades, the S-Class has been an automotive yardstick.

These luxury saloons have always represented the very best of the German marque’s forward-thinking design and technology. In its homeland, this model is referred to as the “Sonderklasse,” or Special-Class. The W126 was only second generation of the car to officially carry the S-Class badge.

There is a very identifiable bell-curve with Mercedes cars. The move from being ultra-desirable status-symbols to becoming second-hand cars and eventually, no-one really cares. Then people start to remember just how good they were, and the market moves.

A rare car today and values are moving up. This S-Class is reserved at a point that allows room for the new owner to improve if they wish to, or just use it with its extremely over-engineered Mercedes build quality, as a daily driver.

Footnote

All the classics in the Hockley Collection start and run. However, as always after a classic has rested up for a period, there will be an element of light recommissioning involved to the Mercedes 420 SEL before returning it properly and safely to the roads.

Good luck bidding! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: Hockley, Essex SS5– it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

 Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
