The Jaguar XK8 is performance, panache, and presence all in a superb British classic sports car package.

Perhaps the best-looking Jaguar since the XJ220, the stunning looks combined with awesome performance from the 290bhp V8 engine make the XK8 an attractive all round classic car. If the thought of having a classic Jaguar that can be an everyday classic, weekend getaway classic or immensely fun second car isn’t enough, then just remember the XK8 also had a 0-60 time of 6.4 secs!

Background

As the 90’s approached, the Jaguar Team knew they couldn’t stand still. A dedicated team began working on a new sports car project. Both cost and time were critical. To save both, the team retained and modified the floorplan from the XJS. They borrowed an existing rear suspension set-up from the saloon Jag, but added all new double wishbone suspension at the front end. A superb all new 32-valve quad cam V8 engine pushing out 290bhp was popped under the bonnet.

The XK8 launched at the Geneva Motor show to rapturous Press reviews. Jaguar knew they had a winner on their hands.

History

  • Our vendor has had for several months
  • Prior to his ownership, his dad owned the XK8
  • Before that we are told “a chap in Grantham owned the Jaguar using it sparingly, mainly for weddings”
  • Registered 14 December 2000
  • MoT’d until June 2023
  • The nice private plate is staying with the XK8.

Our vendor Richard tells us he lent the XK8 to one of his customers over the Christmas period. They completed a 250 trip from Leicester to Margate and the XK8 ‘didn’t miss a beat’.

The reason for sale of this lovely XK is because an E-Type is displacing it. Fair enough.

Mechanicals

The first thing you notice is the enjoyable sound of the quad-cam V8 . 290bhp is put through the rear wheels, and the powerful engine makes the XK8 handle like a sports car should. The auto ‘box comes into it’s own when you’re on longer journeys. The XK8 is a grand tourer like no other. Cruising is effortless. But put your foot down and the quad-cam V8 gets a real howling move on.

The super, 4.0-litre V8 runs well. It pulls hard and produces that fabulous sound that only a V8 can when its on-song.

A look under the bonnet, via our Image Gallery, reveals a clean and tidy engine bay.

With the sonorous V8 mated to the modern five speed ZF auto gear box, this makes the Jaguar XK8 a joy to drive.

Interior

  • Ivory leather
  • Walnut trim

The cabin space has a light, bright spacious feeling. In true Jaguar fashion, the interior is a reminder of the manufacturer’s superb attention to detail. The good condition Ivory leather goes very well with the Black exterior.

The seats are in rather impressive condition for the mileage of the vehicle, with the driver’s seat of course showing slightly more wear than all the others particularly on the outer section.

The rear seats, on the other hand, look like new, as a result of probably never been used. Having said that there is plenty of room, this XK8 is a genuine 2+2 sports car.

Door cards, carpet, headlining and all interior trim look excellent for their age. This is rare on these models, they can get a bit careworn. The lovely walnut dash looks good too.

Outside

Italian style is often banged-on about. But Jaguar really did pull it off with the XK8

Overall, the paint and body is in good condition. It you look closely in the Image Gallery you’ll spot the usual blemish here and there which are typical on a 23 year classic.

The lamps, which often become opaque over time are in good condition.

Bottom line

The XK8 range offers impressive performance and style for the money. That won’t be the case for ever, because the accomplished and sophisticated Jaguar is increasingly appreciated in the classic market.

  • Quad-cam V8 with 370bhp
  • Five speed ‘auto box
  • Good colour
  • Ivory interior

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
