When a car remains in production almost unaltered for 21 years it is genuinely a Classic Car.

As early as 1968, well before the last E-types rolled off the production line in 1974, Jaguar began developing a successor. On the 10 September 1975 Jaguar revealed the XJ-S to the world. Jaguar continually improved the XJS over the years including this final version, considered by many to be the best engineered XJS of all.

Background

The 1991 onwards Jaguar XJS’s are rising in price for good reasons.

  • Galvanised steel body parts
  • Simplified the body’s construction
  • Significantly reduction for corrosion to wreak havoc
  • The rear disc brakes became outboard mounted
  • Greatly simplifying their maintenance

The facelifted cars present a sleeker, sharper appearance, with stylish wraparound rear lights and fewer chrome and plastic adornments. The later models acquired the widely acclaimed 4.0-litre AJ6. It gives the classic Jaguar XJS terrific performance.

History

  • Our vendor, Paul, has owned this car for over 8 years
  • During that time his use has been minimal
  • The XJS was SORN’d for approximately five years
  • He estimates he has covered less than 200 hundred miles in his ownership
  • The XJS has always been garaged  by our vendor with the rest of his small collection
  • Kept on permanent trickle charge
  • NB: The Jag will come with a private plate F11 NXJ – see images!

The paperwork

It is rare to find a classic car with a continuous unbroken service history. We don’t recall the last time we saw a Jaguar with a documented service book like this one.

  • PDI Service 5 September 1991
  • Delivered new 19 September 1991
  • Service stamps from PDI until 114,000 miles
  • The majority of Jaguar Main Dealers Service stamps
  • A folder of general assorted expenses
  • Receipts from our vendors ownership

Paul not only collects classics but races them too. Much of maintenance, including an overhaul of the Jaguar’s suspension bushes along with two rear wheel bearings were done by his race mechanics.

Outside

Is there a better more classic colour than British Racing Green?

Even though the engineering of the facelifted Jaguar XJS’s was on another level to previous models, we always ask vendors “where are the ‘wrinkles’ in your Jaguar?”.

Paul advised us;

The brightwork is all good, you can see your reflection in it. There is not a dent on it. Places such as boot lid are rust free. If I was being hyper critical, I would probably re-lacquer the wheels, as over time, the lacquer tends to go flat.”

As with any classic car there are the usual age related areas. But Paul tells us the outside is generally “really good” but may benefit from a “ mop and polish if the new owner felt he wanted to go that way”.

Inside

The interior of on XJS is an lesson in originality and period charm. It’s not perfect but all the better for it. The patina of the seat leather is there. Not too much but reminding passengers that this is a fully-paid-up 32 year old Jaguar Classic car, not a modern used car.

The XJS dash is well designed and easy to understand. The analogue display is particularly appealing and a signature feature of the classic XJS. The car is very well specified in the cabin too.

  • High specification
  • Lovely unrestored original condition
  • Original Oatmeal interior
  • New wood insert on centre console

The interior is comfortable, clean and inviting. As with any 32 year old classic, the usual areas of wear are there. As you can see from the Image Gallery, the driver’s seat has the obvious wear. Some regular care would get on top of it.

The rear seats, headlining, door cards and fixings are all in fine condition. All the wood is in sound condition.

Mechanicals

Appropriately for a car that with an extensive service history and knowledgeable vendor this car is said “to drive like a dream”.

  • This Jaguar XJS has the superb 4.0 litre AJ6 straight six engine
  • The DOHC 24v AJ6 unit punches out 245bhp
  • Power is fed to the rear wheels via an ultra-rare manual gearbox
  • This combination gives the XJS beautiful smooth and effortless power delivery
  • As you would expect from an XJS with such a Service History, we understand all mechanical systems to be in full working order

Being a rather special and super-rare manual version we of course asked about how the clutch operation feels. In simple terms, “sweet” was the response. From someone who races cars, we’ll take that.

The engine bay looks clean, smart and dry. We understand the XJS drives “very well”

The service history tells its own story, extracts are in the Gallery, but please do ask us if you’d like more detail.

Please note that the video was taken in Summer 2022, the car has been garaged once again since that time.

Our View

How often does a Jaguar XJS with a virtually full Service History from a Jaguar Main Dealer come along?

  • In iconic British Racing Green
  • Carefully stored in our vendor’s own private collection
  • Owned for the last 8 years
  • Drives “like a dream” .. and that comes from a vendor who knows his cars
  • Only being sold to make space in the collection

People in the know have been watching the much improved, later classic XJS’s, quietly creeping up in price. They have a keen following by investors as well as knowledgeable enthusiast.

With a luxurious and comfortable interior combined with stonking performance, its grand-touring credentials are flawless. But the economical 4.0 litre straight six engine makes a great daily classic too.

This is clearly a very good XJS. The extensive Service History should provide a rewarding motoring experience for years to come and a great deal of reassurance. This is a smart and usable classic car. With a very sensible Reserve, we expect a lot of interest.

Good luck bidding – Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH16– it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
