Stylish and sophisticated, the MkII is, without doubt, one of Jaguar’s finest models. The classic Jaguar MkII defined an era of British classic cars. When it was launched, the Mk II Jaguar created its very own class of classic cars; the sports saloon.  It is no surprise that it is one of the most popular cars on the classic scene.

A well-sorted, cherished classic MkII is a very enjoyable drive and the very essence of a British sporting saloon. From the luxurious interior to the taut and confidence-inspiring handling, you will not be disappointed behind the wheel of a good MkII like this one.

Background

This classic MkII is well known in Jaguar circles. It was owned by a fondly remembered member of a well known Jaguar Owners Club since 2006. He sadly died. The Jag passed to his wife. Given the memories they’d enjoyed, she wrestled with whether to part with it. It has sat idle for a while. However, now it is time. A good friend of the family and fellow Club member is handling the sale.

Exterior

Nearly half a century on, the design of the classic MkII still draws attention and admirers wherever it goes. It combines heritage and character by the bucket load.

We find it hard to describe the Cotswold Blue coachwork as anything other than gleaming. Bearing in mind the previous owner of the classic MkII it is no surprise really. The outside is free from dings, dents and the dreaded corrosion.

The chrome-work sparkles. All the brightwork is free from the usual pitting too, the front and rear bumpers are as straight as any we’ve seen. All the rest of the many shiny bits, door handles, spotlights, window surrounds, door mirrors, all shine with a vivacious confidence. Then there is that iconic grille and leaping cat on the bonnet. The whole package comes together superbly.

Original steel wheels remain fitted and look very good. Picked out in the body colour and complemented by the original chrome hub caps, they give the Jaguar a touch of understated class.

Interior

The near 20% increase in glass to the MkII body, transforms the interior space. It delivers an incredibly light and airy feel to the cabin space.

We’ve seen very few MkII interiors in this kind of condition. Slide into the drivers seat and take a look around. It is hard to imagine you are in a 50+ year old classic. This one feels like it’s just come out of the showroom.  It is very hard to see any faults.

Take a good look at the numerous detailed images. They say more than we can, so we’ll let the classic MkII do the talking and just pick out our highlights.

The glorious walnut, which is so synonymous with the MkII, has a mirror like finish, the like of which we don’t think we can recall seeing for many years.

The Powder Blue interior is in as near as good a condition as it can get. It’s as simple as that; seats, door cards, carpet, all of them are in tip-top condition. The authentic images show just how good the headlining is too.

Engine.

When the classic MkII arrived more than half a century ago, it was like a rocket-ship. The MkII 3.4 has 210bhp on tap, just 10 horses less than the 3.8 at 220bhp. The 3.4 was capable of 120mph, and performance was so superior to anything else on the road that it quickly became the car to have.

When you start up this 3.4ltr straight-six XK engine, you’re greeted with a delightfully reassuring purring engine. Just like the rest of this MkII Jag, the engine and engine bay has been fastidiously maintained. Just look at the level of detail and attention revealed in the images.

The overall engine bay is spot-on. Much of the alloy has been polished to very high quality, including, the rocker covers, timing chain covers and SU pots.

In case you miss it, the exhaust header shines in its enamel black coating. Then take a look at all the other ancillary components. All of them have been cherished by a careful, thoughtful owner.

Our view

What a classic car the Jaguar MkII was and remains today.

Climb in and your senses will be invaded. The smell, the light, the space, the reassuring sound of the door closing with a clunk beside you. Then press ‘that’ button and listen to the double overhead cam XK engine purr at the front with a lustful exit through the exhaust at the rear. Then, once you’ve stopped grinning and pull away; the classic Jaguar MkII is a special place to be.

As The Boss always says about the condition of classic cars; there is a classic car for everyone. The condition of Jaguar MkII’s span the entire spectrum from project cars, to good cars, to exceptional cars like this one.

Jaguar MkII’s in this condition are not that common. They are not like buses, there will not be another along behind it in five minutes. If you’ve been looking for the ‘right’ MkII, you’ve probably just found it.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classic cars are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘cars are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
