Effortless performance, impressive refinement and a great all-round driving experience. In 1995 Jaguar upped the ante and launched the XJS Celebration. It was a special edition of the iconic XJS to mark 21 years of production. Built in small numbers, when an XJS  Celebration comes to the market they always attract huge interest.

History and paperwork

  • Registered in April 1996
  • First owner was Jaguar cars of Browns Lane Birmingham
  • The car was purchased by two employees of Jaguar
  • Our vendor has owned since 2000
  • A full service history with all Jaguar stamps to 50,000 miles

Our vendor, Paul is an ex Ford and Jaguar engineer. Paul tells us “I have maintained this vehicle to a high standard carrying out all servicing and maintenance myself using correct time frames and Manufacturers components”

Outside

The Jaguar XJS Celebration Convertible Model stood out. This example has:

  • Ice Blue Metallic paintwork
  • New Hood fitted 2018
  • Factory fitted boot spoiler
  • Federal headlamps
  • Factory body side mouldings
  • Chrome wires
  • Pirelli Tyres 5.5 to 5.8
  • Recently tracked and all four wheels balanced

By the Nineties, Jaguar had sorted their quality problems. From 1994 all cars were galvanised.

Having said that the exterior condition of this Jaguar XJS is still head and shoulders above many of the XJS’s that come to market from this period. The Ice Blue Metallic paintwork is described as “in excellent condition” by our vendor. Even in the very close up images in the Gallery it is hard to disagree.

Inside

The interior of the Jaguar XJS Celebration is impressive.

  • Good condition throughout
  • Full cream leather with contrasting coffee piping and dashtop
  • Special Celebration wooden steering wheel
  • Extensive interior wood trim

The cream leather interior has matching carpets and is in good condition throughout. As expected there is the usual wear on the drivers seat base.

The dashboard is in good condition with the extensive wood trim presenting beautifully and all of the dials and gauges look in good condition. Paul advised us that the air con is not working. He has however had it looked at. The evaporator is faulty. Estimates that Paul has received suggest a figure of £300-£500 to rectify. As this Celebration is the convertible model, it has never really troubled Paul. It remains for the new owner to decide. We’d probably enjoy it as it is to be honest.

Mechanicals

This XJS Celebration has been looked after.

  • Oil changes every 6,000 miles
  • The diff has been stripped and rebuilt
  • Rear suspension shock absorbers and springs replaced using Aston Martin DB6 parts
  • Front suspension changed using Jaguar parts
  • Front callipers and discs changed
  • Top and bottom timing chain tensioners changed
  • New Battery fitted
  • All of the above work was carried out within the past 6000 miles
  • Original Factory booklets and service book complete with three keys and two fobs

Powered by the AJ16 engine providing 238bhp it provides the best in XJS refinement, without the crushing fuel bills of the V12.

The engine bay is clean and tidy. Release the brake, apply a whiff of accelerator and the big car purrs down the road. The four speed delivers without fuss

The 4.0-litre engine is impeccably smooth and delivers more than enough power for this Grand Tourer. Add to that the smaller engine’s greater fuel economy and the AJ16 would be our choice for the XJS.

The steering is light but still communicates feel. The big XJS is not meant to bullied along B-road. But as a long distance tourer, it is magnificent. Jaguar designed the XJS for just such a role. This XJS has cossetted recent owner from one end of the country to the other without fuss or drama.

Our view

The 1996 Jaguar XJS Celebration was a fitting tribute to one of the most iconic luxury cars of its era.

We should address the elephant in the room, well, in this XJS; the mileage. We all know that when classic cars are unused, things like, seals, bushes, electrical connections all start to go wonky the minute they are used. This one has been carefully used and looked after by a knowledgeable ex-engineer of the marque. He knows these cars.

Because of the rarity, when a Jaguar XJS Celebration comes to the market they usually sell for somewhere between £18,000 – £24,000. Our very sensible vendor has factored in the mileage to his reserve. One lucky bidder is going to get a very well looked after XJS Celebration in good condition at a large discount to the current market.

Good luck bidding.

Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: Fridaythorpe, East Riding YO25 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

 Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
