The Jaguar E-Type is a classic car that needs no introduction. Its timeless design was once described as “the most beautiful car in the world.” We can’t improve on that. Instead of telling you how good E-types are, we’ll tell you about this remarkable Series 1.

History and background

Any Jaguar E-Type is an attractive proposition. Ones like this do not come along that often.

  • An engine rebuild 11,000 miles ago
  • An impressive history file in six box files
  • UK-supplied right-hand drive Series 1
  • The best colour combo of Carmen Red and black leather
  • With the current owner for almost five years
  • MOT’d every year without fail since 2006
  • In the last 16 years has covered approx. 1,000 miles per year

Our vendor has recently spent over £2,000 on the E-Type including brakes and engine service (invoices are in the Gallery) so this gives great peace of mind to bidders.

Mechanicals

Open up that wonderful Jaguar E-type front end and the condition of that classic, triple carb, straight-six, 4.2 litre engine is pure joy.

The polished twin rocker covers look delightful. The pots on the triple SU’s carb shine like a shilling in a sweep’s pocket.

Purists will tell you the 3.8 litre engine is the ‘one to have’; real experts know the 4.2 litre engine attached to a manual gearbox is truly the ‘right’ E-type to enjoy.

The engine in this car was rebuilt approx. 11,000 miles ago and it looks it. Take ten minutes to go through our Image Gallery and you’ll see plenty of other qualities in that engine bay too.

The rear end hasn’t been neglected. We are told the history file reveals that was rebuilt too.

At the rear are those unmistakable twin pipes. The photos capture some detail on that, we’ll leave you to check them out. We’re told they make a beautiful sound.

Check out the video too – it was a rather nippy Yorkshire day when it was taken so there’s a bit of condensation from the exhaust.

Inside

Our vendor and those before him have resisted the temptation to indulge in ‘modernising’ the inside of this Jaguar E-Type Series 1 2+2’s marvellous cabin. It is as it was intended. Full of style and character.

The original black leather interior is in good condition with a simply wonderful atmosphere that only an original E-type has. They are only original once, as the saying goes.

The dashboard and switchgear is the stuff of legend and needs no explanation from us. The Image Gallery will tell you everything. All the soft trim, door cards, carpet, etc. are fine.

Drop into the seat behind the wood rimmed steering wheel. Initially your gaze is drawn to the clocks and array of switches. You’ll pause momentarily. Imperceptibly, your sightline will be pulled along that long swooping bonnet. Without thinking, your left arm moves the gear lever forward into first with a notchy ‘snick’. Your muscle memory simultaneously moves your right and left foot in perfect symmetry and you’re moving, grinning. This is what an E-Type does to you.

Outside

Was there ever a car whose utter timeless beauty, is as instantly recognised as a Jaguar E-type is?

  • Gorgeous Carmen Red exterior
  • Great quality chrome
  • Striking wire wheels
  • Webasto roof

The quality and shimmer of that Carmen Red paintwork seems to drape and flow its way over the E-Type’s body, accentuating its long graceful body lines. Complementing it, is the brilliant brightwork.

You can see the condition of those astonishing and eye-wateringly expensive wrap-around bumpers.

Items such as the headlight bezels, glass, lamps and badges all just add the extraordinary design of the E-type. The four absolutely lovely chrome wires finish the whole picture off of this E-type and what a stunning picture it is.

Summary

We often get asked which is the best Jaguar E-type to buy. What a massive question.

It boils down to this. Either buy one that you know you are going to have spend money on. Or buy one that somebody else has already spent a small fortune on.

This is a stunning looking Jaguar E-Type.

History / Provenance. This one has it in spades, well in actual fact, in six massive files.

Condition. Spend ten minutes dwelling on those very comprehensive and smashing images and video. No two classics are the same. Therefore it is a subjective view on what is good, excellent, etc. We will all have an opinion. Opinions are unlikely to be split on this one.

Price. E-Type prices have moved around more than British Prime Ministers. They seem to be settled for a while; E-Types we mean!

Prices spiked in 2015, then flattened. They spiked again in lock down but that was a one-off. During those spikes, good ones were simply over valued and unaffordable. Right now they are attainable. Nearly a decade after the big rise, history says they are due another spike. We’ve no idea when that is though.

However, what we do know, now is a good time to buy an E-Type that 6-8 years ago was valued at £100k – for considerably less. Good ones are uncommon.

Our opinion? Do not miss this moment. Do not miss this Jaguar E-Type.
