When a car remains in production almost unaltered for 21 years it is genuinely a classic car.

With the last E-types rolling off the production line in 1974 Jaguar needed a worthy successor. As early as 1968 Jaguar were thinking ahead. They designated the initial project a codename: XJ21. This morphed into the XJ 27/28 and after many internal discussions Jaguar finally settled on XJS.

On the 10 September 1975 Jaguar revealed the XJS to the world.

In V12 5.3 litre form the XJS is a true supercar, with performance of 155mph and 0-60 in 7.3 seconds. As models developed, Jaguar made subtle changes making the XJS even better. Journalists delighted their readers with tales of travelling at 100 mph in near total silence. The public couldn’t get enough of the XJS either.

History

  • Our vendor has owned this for just four years
  • The XJS was SORN’d for approximately four years prior to his purchase
  • He estimates, due to poor health, that he has covered just over 300 hundred miles in his ownership
  • The XJS has always been garaged by our vendor
  • Kept on permanent trickle charge – brand new battery was fitted last week too

The car will be supplied with two sets of keys, the V5 in our vendors name and the original Owners wallet containing the service book with 14 stamps. The early stamps from its original supplying dealer, Merritts Jaguar in Amersham, Buckinghamshire with the latter stamps from Appleyard Jaguar.

There are also a handful of MOTs, with the most recent expiring on 6th March 2024, along with a handful of invoices for various jobs that have been carried out. The current mileage is sitting at 117k but as you are aware that is miniscule when considering that these over-engineered engines are good for at least twice that.

Outside

Even though the engineering of the facelifted XJS’s was on another level to previous Jags, we always ask vendors “where are the ‘wrinkles’ in your Jaguar?”.

This is what our vendor said:

“There are the usual minor dents and scuffs here and then from minor carpark mishaps but no obvious crash damage. If I was being honest, I have mopped and polished it as good as I can, but the paintwork could really do with re lacquering as although it presents well in the images the paintwork is very flat or has lost its shine.”

Our vendor has provided a number of images many of them highlighting areas where XJS’s tend to suffer. Please take a good look through the numerous images and make your own judgement.

Inside

The cream leather is in decent enough condition with the usual wear on the driver’s seat. The walnut is in good condition with signs of age showing on the ski-slope section around the gear change knob.

  • Period NEC Car phone fitted
  • The roof lining has been replaced recently due to the inevitable sagging issues on the original.

Unfortunately, the AC is no longer operating, and our vendor believes it has been disconnected. He believes the cruise control does not work but having only driven 300 miles he could be wrong. Lastly those sumptuous front seats no longer heat up, well the drivers one anyway. You will notice in the images that the driver door pad is missing a speaker, that is with the car but has never been refitted.

The carpets are in similar condition and are currently protected by good quality front mats.

Mechanicals

The V12 is a legendary engine, and it is a remarkably reliable piece of engineering. As a result of his illness, the vendor has only managed to put 300 miles on the car over the course of his 4-year ownership and is finding it increasingly difficult to get in and out.

This has led to a gap in its service history, but it still drives impeccably and as you would expect from that mighty V12, it pulls like a train. It did receive a new radiator cap and has a few other minor spares that will come with the car and just last week had a new battery fitted.

The wheels were refurbished just prior to our vendors purchase and with under 300 miles they are as good now as they were then.  All five tyres are full of tread so no expense will be need there in the near future.

In addition, our vendor has advised that he has recently had the following fitted:

  • New front discs & pads
  • New battery
  • Both thermostats replaced

Our View

Those in the know have been watching the much improved, later classic XJS’s, quietly creeping up in price. They have a keen following by investors as well as knowledgeable enthusiasts.

With a comfortable interior combined with stonking performance, the Jaguar XJS’s grand-touring credentials are flawless.

This is a very usable V12 XJS that comes with Service History plus Invoices/receipts for work undertaken. It has been sensibly reserved, yes it needs some work. But it’s a starting point for what could be a very decent classic.

Good luck! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: Redcar, Cleveland TS10– it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
