The Jaguar XJ6 Series. Its proven combination of silken mechanicals, outstanding comfort, and sheer poise were truly world beating. The European opposition such as BMW and Mercedes could not get anywhere near the British classic. The final model XJ6, the Jaguar XJ6 Series 3, was one of Jaguar’s finest cars.

History

  • Like many of these, this XJ6 was purchased from new by a Company and became a Directors car
  • When the Director left the Company, he left with the Jaguar
  • It has stacks of service history as you’d expect with a Company owned car
  • In the Gallery are a raft of MOT certificates
  • It has been off the road, we think, for around three years.

In the last six months it has undergone a sympathetic but thorough overhaul, which fixed a number of areas but crucially retained and preserved the rare originality.

Outside and underside

The final XJ6 series, the Series 3, arrived in 1980 and ended in 1986. Making this a very last model.

Restyled by the Italian design experts at Pininfarina, the Series 3 is considered to be the best looking Jaguar XJ6.

The XJ6’s stiffened body incorporated a central platform with bracing from the sills, transmission tunnel and front & rear firewalls. Two transverse box-section crossmembers and bonded-in front and rear windshields completed the set up.

That wasn’t all. Rust-proofing and painting technology would improve through production. By 1982, all Jaguar XJ6s received a phosphate pre-treatment, electro-primer, adhesion promoter and four coats of thermo-plastic acrylic paint. Protective wax was then injected into their body cavities and under-sealing. Take a look at the images and you can see the preservation of this XJ6.

In addition to that, this one has had a rear valance which had previously caused it to fail the MOT. Goodness knows why a cosmetic panel would cause a ‘fail’ is beyond us, but hey ho. Both the fuel tanks came out. If you look at the huge amount of underside images in the Gallery, you’ll see for yourself the other mechanical work that has been undertaken.

Our vendor, Peter, tells us the paint work is in very good condition. Additionally he tells us there are a couple of wear and tear, age related type marks to the body. On the basis that they are only original once,  and as these marks were minor, Peter made the wise decision to leave them as is.

Mechanicals

  • The legendary 4.2-litre straight six XK engine
  • 205 bhp
  • Borg Warner three speed Auto ‘box
  • Independent suspension
  • Four wheel disc brakes
  • Factory fitted original wheels
  • Four new tyres recently fitted

There are many things that make the Series 3 stand-out. The turbine-like power of the 4.2-litre engine. The smooth sensuous ride. The quietness when moving at speed that will cause you to glance at the rev counter and speedo more than once. But above all that feather-light power steering. Such a great combo packed in to one car.

You’ll see for yourself how well this car has been looked after. The historic paperwork speaks for itself. But the current images speak volumes. More than we can. Take a look and you decide.

Inside

This Jaguar is a very rare XJ6 on the inside. Back in the day, someone made the very sound decision to spec this Series 3 not with standard leather, but with cloth. And today it still looks incredible.

You could be forgiven for thinking it has recently been re-trimmed. It hasn’t. It just is that good.

  • Dove Grey seats
  • Mocha coloured carpet
  • Wood and chrome
  • All the above in excellent order

All the dashboard and controls are expertly laid out, with every switch and knob within easy reach of the driver. The instrument cluster is simple and easy to read, providing all the information you need to drive with confidence.

It is a testament to Jaguar’s design and the quality of materials used that this Jaguar looks as good as it does today. One last point. If you look closely, you’ll see the factory QC stickers on the seat belt buckles. We’ve said it before, they are only original once.

Our view

The 1986 Jaguar XJ6 Series 3 is a legend. It represents the epitome of British automotive engineering, with its timeless style, impressive power, and luxurious comfort.

We all wanted one way back when, but they were the preserve of the very few. Businessmen, royalty and superstars.

Good ones like this are few and far between.

  • One former Company/personal owner from new
  • Packed with documented history
  • Very good condition inside and out

For a number of years prices were supressed by the many around in very poor condition. Those ‘bangers’ are now fading away. Trying to find an XJ6 Series 3 is now tricky. Trying to find one that ticks all the boxes is becoming difficult. These are next breakthrough in Jaguar terms. We are seeing values creep up now because of scarcity. Our view is these are the emerging e-type.

However, put that aside. Buy this one for the sheer pleasure of ownership.

Good luck bidding! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: Rotherham, South Yorkshire S62 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

 Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
