At launch in 2002, the MG TF was derided by a few as not being a ‘proper’ MG. Which is a shame and completely unwarranted because it’s quoted and known to be a better drive than the revered Mazda MX5.  As such, these cars have developed an extremely strong following, often from the same people who can be relied upon to enthuse about the MGB, etc.

With a mid-mounted 1.6 litre engine, as previously mentioned the MG TF actually handles better than the Mazda MX5.

Our MG TF has only 1 previous owner on the V5, it was originally registered to Arnold Clark and used as a demonstrator before the only real owner purchased it.

Used extremely sparingly with literally 15 miles added to the odometer since 2017 and just 5,000 miles since 2010.

Exterior

In metallic British Racing Green, arguably the best colour, this MG TF, although a slightly aging design, still looks fantastic from any angle whether that be with the roof up or down – and with only 17,435 miles on the clock you can see why it presents so well.

As can be seen in the images the bodywork is all straight and true with only the most minor of nicks here and there, most notably on the nearside rear bumper. Now let us be clear here, they genuinely are that minor that an hour going round the car with a bottle of polish will get rid of virtually every mark. Our vendor admits that had he more time he would have done that himself and we would be presenting the MG TF  as immaculate.

Interior

The cabin area is in wonderful condition with no obvious issues or wear and tear to be found; as you would expect in a 17,000-mile car.  All the switches operate as they should, with this super example needing for nothing. The boot area is immaculate and lifting the bonnet and you will see that it presents “as new” with the spare wheel looking like it has literally never been out of the wheel well – and has definitely not seen any tarmac.

Extremely impressive.

Engine

The MG TF is powered by the company’s 114bhp 1.6-litre K series engine. It’s far from hi-tech, but the four-cylinder unit delivers a 0-60mph sprint time of 9.2 seconds and rarely feels over-whelmed. Mounted behind the driver’s seat, explaining why it is so revered in the handling department, the engine sounds sporty and delivers a real punch when the accelerator is treated a little aggressively.

Benefitting from a full service just 700 miles ago, admittedly it was a few years back but with such minimal miles being travelled it definitely offers peace of mind in the reliability department. There is also a box in the boot evidencing this with all the old parts inside, this includes the timing belt, water pump, filters and the all-important head gasket that, commonly, is known to deliver issues.

Wheels Tyres Suspension and other

There is not too much to be said here other than that the standard six spoke 15-inch alloys are in great shape. The 195/55 15 front matching tyres and slightly wider 205/55 15 rear matching tyres are all showing massive amounts of tread.

As previously mentioned, the handling of these super little mid-engined roadsters is just as exciting as it is engaging and if you haven’t driven one yet then you are missing out.  This particular example has led a very easy life and that shows; it is as tight and taught as it was when it left the factory. There are no knocks or creaks anywhere.

The car has been treated to copper brake lines so stops as well as it goes. The heater pipes have also been upgraded and the obligatory Stainless-Steel exhaust has been fitted. Superb and subtle enhancements to what is a very original and collectable example of these wonderful little roadsters

Our view

An MG TF in good condition is a fantastic value for money sports car, this particular example has been spoiled with a few very desirable upgrades, yet still looks like the perfect collectable example that it is.

With every common issue having been sorted along with that extremely low mileage, we expect this will be snapped up by someone looking for the best available example currently on the market. We do not say that loosely, we do genuinely believe that this is just that, up there with the best on the market.

To add to that, MG TFs are also on the upward curve of appreciation so now is probably the right time to get into two seat roadsters without the worry of large maintenance costs and massive depreciation.
